🌍 SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: The "Wonder Fish" – Tilapia 🐟

While many people know Tilapia as a delicious dinner staple, these fish are actually biological superstars with some of the coolest survival skills in the water!

👄 The Ultimate "Mouth-Brooders"
Tilapia are some of the most dedicated parents in the fish world. Many species are mouth-brooders, meaning the mother (or sometimes the father) carries the eggs—and even the hatched babies—inside their mouth to protect them from predators! Talk about a safe neighborhood. 🏠

🛡️ Survival of the Toughest
Tilapia are the "MacGyvers" of the water. They can thrive in conditions that would be impossible for most other fish:
• Crowded Spaces: They are very social and don't mind living close to their neighbors.
• Low Oxygen: They can handle murky water where other fish might struggle to breathe.
• Salt or Fresh: Some species can easily transition between freshwater and salty "brackish" water!

🥗 The Planet’s Recyclers
Most Tilapia are herbivores, meaning they prefer a salad of algae and underwater plants. Because they eat "low on the food chain," they are incredibly efficient to farm, making them one of the most sustainable protein sources on Earth!

📏 Fun Facts:
• Ancient History: They are sometimes called "St. Peter’s Fish" because of a famous story in the Bible.
• Global Travelers: Originally from Africa and the Middle East, they are now found in over 135 countries.
• Fast Growers: A tiny fingerling can grow to a harvestable size in just 6 to 7 months!

Did you know Tilapia were such protective parents? Whether you see them in an aquarium or on your plate, these fish are a vital part of our global ecosystem!

🦓 SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: The Yellow Perch 🎣

If you’ve ever gone fishing in a cool northern lake, you’ve likely met the "Zebra of the Water." The Yellow Perch is one of the most recognizable and beloved freshwater fish in North America!

🎨 Built-in Camouflage
Those 6 to 9 dark vertical bars aren't just for style—they are perfect "reeds" that help the perch hide in underwater vegetation. Their bright yellow-to-gold sides and orange-tinted fins make them one of the most beautiful fish to pull through the ice or over the side of a boat.

🥚 The "Ribbon" Layers
Unlike many fish that scatter individual eggs, the Yellow Perch has a unique way of starting a family. Females lay their eggs in a long, gelatinous "accordion-style" ribbon that can be up to 7 feet long! They drape these ribbons over submerged logs or plants to keep them safe until they hatch.

🍱 The Ultimate "Snack" Fish
In the underwater world, everyone wants to eat a perch! They are a primary food source for:
• 🐊 Walleye
• 🐟 Northern Pike
• 🦅 Osprey and Herons

But don't worry—they are prolific breeders, which keeps their populations strong and healthy.

📏 Quick Stats:
• The "Jumbo": While most perch are 6–10 inches, a "Jumbo" perch over 12 inches is a trophy for any angler!
• School's In Session: Perch are highly social. If you catch one, keep your line in the water—there are likely hundreds more right beneath you.
• Winter Warriors: They stay active all winter long, making them the #1 target for ice fishermen.

Are you a fan of the Friday Night Fish Fry? 🍴 Is Yellow Perch your favorite meal, or do you prefer the challenge of catching them? Let us know in the comments!

🎣 SPECIES SPOTLIGHT: The Largemouth Bass 🐟

Did you know that the "king of the pond" isn’t actually a bass at all? It’s technically the largest member of the Sunfish family! Here’s why this iconic fish is a favorite for anglers and nature lovers alike:

👄 Why the "Large" Mouth?
The name isn’t just for show. A Largemouth’s jaw extends past the back of its eye, acting like a vacuum! When they open their mouths quickly, they create a suction force that pulls prey right in.

🥗 The Ultimate Opportunist
If it fits in their mouth, they’ll probably eat it. While they love crawfish and smaller fish, big "buckets" have been known to snack on:
• 🐸 Frogs
• 🐍 Snakes
• 🐦 Baby ducks
• 🐁 Even the occasional unlucky mouse!

🛡️ Dad of the Year
In the fish world, the dads do the heavy lifting! After the female lays the eggs, the male Largemouth stays behind to guard the nest from predators like Bluegill and Crawfish. He’ll stick around to protect the "fry" (baby fish) until they are strong enough to swim on their own.

📏 Fun Facts:
• The Record: The world record has stood since 1932—a massive 22 lb 4 oz lunker caught in Georgia!
• Homebody: They love "structure." Look for them hiding under lily pads, fallen logs, or docks, waiting to ambush their next meal.
• Sense of Sound: They have a "lateral line" along their side that feels vibrations in the water, helping them find prey even in murky water.

🎣 Species Spotlight: Bluegill ☀️

Whether you are building a new ecosystem or supplementing an existing one, Bluegill are the hardworking foundation of your water!

Why Bluegill are a must-have: ✅ The Perfect Starter Fish: Eager to bite and easy to catch, making them the #1 choice for introducing kids and grandkids to the joy of fishing. ✅ Foundation of the Food Chain: They are the primary food source for Largemouth Bass. A healthy Bluegill population means bigger, healthier Bass! ✅ Natural Pest Control: They love to eat aquatic insects and mosquito larvae, helping to keep your pond area more comfortable in the summer. ✅ Hardy & Prolific: They adapt easily to nearly any pond environment and spawn multiple times a year, ensuring your pond stays well-stocked naturally.

1 Acre pond Stocking Guide
🤔 Not sure how many fish to order? Let’s talk numbers! 🐟

One of the most common questions we get at the Darke SWCD office is: "I have a one-acre pond... what should I put in it?" While every pond is unique, here is our "Pro-Balance" Recommendation to create a thriving, sustainable ecosystem for a 1-acre body of water. Use this as your guide for the 2026 season!

⚖️ Step 1: Create the Balance (The Essentials) To keep your pond healthy and the food chain moving, start with:
• 100 Largemouth Bass: The top predator to manage your populations.
• 100 Bluegill: The foundational forage and classic "panfish."
• 1,000 Fathead Minnows: The essential "fuel" to jumpstart growth.

🍽️ Step 2: Add Variety (Choose Your Favorites!) Want more action or a better fish fry? Add 100 each of the species you enjoy most:
• 100 Channel Catfish: For bottom cleaning and big fights.
• 100 Jumbo Yellow Perch: For the best-tasting fillets in Ohio.
• 100 Redear Shellcracker: For natural snail and parasite control.
• 100 Black Crappie: For early spring fishing excitement.
• 100 Hybrid Bluegill: For rapid growth and larger panfish.

🌿 Step 3: Maintenance (The Cleanup Crew)
• 4–10 White Amur: Depending on your w**d levels, these "living lawnmowers" will keep your pond from becoming overgrown.
________________________________________
Pro-Tip: If your pond is smaller or larger than an acre, just scale these numbers up or down! (e.g., for a 1/2 acre pond, just cut these numbers in half).

📅 Order Deadline: April 24, 2026 🚚 Pickup Date: May 6, 2026 🔗 Forms & Pricing: www.darkeswcd.com
