Meet Rochelle Riley!! She joins us this year at the 2026 SC African American Tourism Conference for our opening session titled Beyond Tourism: Building Black Wealth through Culture.

She is the new Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Charleston, after a stellar six years as Director of Arts and Culture for the City of Detroit.

Her pivot to the creative arts came after a nearly 20-year career as an award-winning Detroit columnist for the Detroit Free Press.

Rochelle believes that artists deserve the same economic support as other businesses. “Actors are small businesses. Musicians are small businesses. Storytellers are small businesses,” she said. “And we need to make sure they not only survive, but thrive – in Detroit.”

We welcome her experience and expertise. We are excited that she is apart of this year's conference.
