Yesterday we celebrated two exceptional individuals that have given countless hours to the citizens of Meriwether County.

Chief Sandy Garrett has served the citizens of this county for over 50 years. He was the first Fire Chief of Meriwether County Fire Department. He still serves as our Maintenance Chief.

Chief Johnny Worley was the second Chief of Meriwther County Fire Department. He also served many years as the Coroner of Meriwether County.

In recognition of the service of these two individuals we were pleased to dedicate our two new tankers in their names.

Tanker 15 which will currently be housed in Woodbury will bear the name "Big Johnny".

Tanker 1 which will currently be housed in Greenville will bear the name "Big Sandy".

We continue to build on the solid foundation laid by these two individuals and all of the ones who served under their leadership.

🔥🐾 Where’s Sparks?! HE’S BACK! 🐾🔥

Several people have been asking about Sparks lately Is he still around? What’s he been up to?

Don’t worry… Sparks is still here! ❤️🐶

He just took the summer off to spend some time with the kids, relax, recharge, and, of course, enjoy as many muddy days as possible! 🐾💦 Apparently, if there was a mud puddle anywhere nearby, Sparks considered it an invitation. 😂

And according to his human, it was also WAY too hot outside and she gets too sweaty! 😂☀️

But now Sparks is fresh, clean (for the moment!), recharged, and ready to get back to work! 🐾🚒

He’s ready to jump back into his fire safety education and continue his training so he can keep helping teach kids and families how to stay safe.

And Sparks has some exciting news… his mission is growing! ❤️🔥

Sparks has expanded his paws beyond Meriwether County and is now working across the state of Georgia with the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation! He’s excited to meet new people, visit new places, and help spread the message of fire and burn safety throughout Georgia.

But no matter where his paws take him…

❤️ Meriwether County will always come first in his heart. ❤️

That’s home. That’s where his journey started. And those will always be his people.

So yes, Sparks is still here. He’s rested. He’s clean. He’s ready. And he’s BACK TO WORK! 🐶🔥🚒

Although, knowing Sparks, that whole “clean” thing probably won’t last very long if he finds another mud puddle! 😂🐾💦

So what were you doing Tuesday night???

🚨MCFR was training with two new tankers.We were able to run an I.S.O. exercise in an effort to improve our over all I.S.O. rating.🚨

Meriwether County is a rural county that lacks fire hydrants in large parts of the county.

⏲️💧How do we address that, we bring our water with us. This exercise guages our ability to set flows within a certain time frame and then establish water supply through a water shuttle program.⏲️💧

We will conduct these trainings every quarter in different areas of the county.

🚒 Leave the fireworks to the professionals.

Before you light that fuse, remember:
🎇 Sparklers can burn at up to 2,000°F—hot enough to melt some metals.
🔥 Fireworks cause thousands of injuries every year, with burns to the hands, face, and eyes being the most common.
🏠 A single stray firework can ignite dry grass, roofs, or mulch in seconds.
👧 Even sparklers account for a large number of injuries in young children each year.

Celebrate safely, enjoy the show, and let the professionals handle the boom. Have a safe and happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸🎆

Welcome to tornado season, folks! 🌪️⛈️

A few minutes of preparation now can make a huge difference later. Here are some important tornado preparedness reminders for your family including the furry members too 🐾

🚨 Tornado Preparedness Checklist:
• Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts
• Keep phones charged and portable chargers ready
• Know where your safe place is BEFORE warnings are issued
• Put together an emergency go bag with:

* Flashlights
* Batteries
* Medications
* Important documents
* Water/snacks
* Change of clothes
* First aid supplies

🎒 Kids Emergency Backpack:
Have a small backpack ready for each child with:
• Identification and important documents
• Emergency contact information
• Parent/guardian names and phone numbers
• A list of safe people approved to pick them up
• Written instructions on where to go in case of separation
• Comfort items like a stuffed animal, blanket, or small toy
• Snacks, water, and any needed medications

🐶 Pet Preparedness:
• Keep pet leashes/harnesses near where you sleep
• Have carriers easily accessible
• Include food, medications, and water in your pet go bag
• DON’T forget vaccination/shot records in case emergency boarding is needed due to storm damage or displacement

🏠 Where To Shelter During A Tornado:
• Basement or storm shelter is best
• If no basement, go to an interior room on the lowest floor
• Stay away from windows and exterior walls
• Bathrooms, closets, and hallways can offer extra protection
• Cover yourself with blankets, helmets, or mattresses if possible

🚫 Avoid:
• Mobile homes if possible
• Cars during a tornado warning
• Large open rooms like gyms or cafeterias

*Most importantly* don’t wait until the sirens are going off to make a plan. Stay weather aware and stay safe this tornado season! 🌪️💙
