Although the results didn’t fall in our favor, my heart is full of gratitude.

To every supporter, volunteer, friend, family member, and voter who believed in this campaign, thank you!Thank you for your prayers, your encouragement, the phone calls, the conversations, the door knocking, the shared posts, and the countless ways you helped move this vision forward. This campaign was never just about a name on a ballot; it was about people who believe Pitt County can continue to grow, improve.

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have met so many incredible residents across our county. Your stories, your concerns, and your hopes for our community have only strengthened my commitment to public service.

This is not the end of the journey. Leadership is not defined by a single election, but by the willingness to keep serving, keep showing up, and keep fighting for what matters. To everyone who stood with me: don’t be discouraged and don’t give up. Our voices still matter, our work is not finished, and the vision we share for our community is still alive.

This campaign may be over, but my commitment to Pitt County is not. I will continue to serve, continue to listen, and continue to work for the people of this community.

For the close of Black History Month 2026 I choose to
Honor the Legacy of Rev. David Hammond Sr.

For nearly two decades (1998–2017), Reverend David Hammond faithfully served the citizens of Pitt County as a County Commissioner in District 1, being one of the longest-serving commissioners in our county’s history. But long before the title, there was a calling.

At just 15 years old, he began working at W. E. Flanagan Memorial Funeral Home & Cremations, captivated by the dignity, discipline, and devotion of funeral service. What began as admiration turned into nearly 50 years of service to grieving families. In 1996, he became owner, and upon retirement, entrusted the legacy to his daughter, ensuring that excellence would continue.

Reverend Hammond was more than a public servant. Licensed to preach in 1971 at Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church and ordained through the Old Eastern Missionary Baptist Association, he carried both a shepherd’s heart and a servant’s leadership. Many across Eastern North Carolina knew him as “Dynamic Dave,” a powerful radio voice and community advocate.

Why This Tribute Is Personal:

As a young preacher ordained through the same Old Eastern Missionary Baptist Association, I see pieces of my own journey reflected in his.
• We were both young preachers answering the call early.
• We were both shaped by funeral service at a youthful age.
• We both began our journey at Flanagan Funeral Home.
• We both understand what it means to serve families in their most vulnerable moments.

Reverend Hammond didn’t just serve behind a pulpit or in a funeral chapel, he carried that servant leadership into public office. He proved that faith, professionalism, and public service can coexist with integrity.

Today, I aspire to follow in those footsteps, not simply to hold a title, but to carry a torch. To serve, to listen, to advocate, to lead! And by God’s grace, to break barriers, becoming the youngest County Commissioner in Pitt County history.

This tribute is more than recognition. It’s gratitude for a trailblazer who made it possible for young leaders like me to envision ourselves at the table.

Legacy is not just what you leave behind.
It’s who you inspire to rise next.

The Pitt County Board of Commissioners will host a Pitt County Legislative lunch meeting on Friday, March 20, 2026 from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the Pitt County Community Center, Buxton Room, located at Alice F. Keene District Park, 4561 County Home Road, Greenville, NC. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss legislative goals and objectives for FY 26-27. This past Saturday I had the privilege of attending the 4th Annual Black Student Success Summit at ECU and I left truly inspired.

To be surrounded by rising Black leaders committed to excellence, culture, and connection was powerful. There is something transformative about being in rooms where ambition meets authenticity.

Our keynote speaker, Tonya J. Lynch, delivered an amazing and impactful message on figtive kinship, the idea that family is not always defined by blood, but by bonds. In our community, we have always survived and thrived through chosen family, mentorship, and collective responsibility. Her message reminded us that success is never solitary, it is sustained through community.

One of the most impactful sessions for me was the uGoodBro conversation. In a time where Black men’s mental health is often overlooked, it was refreshing and necessary to see safe spaces intentionally created for us to speak, process, and heal. That kind of work is ahead of the curve, and deeply needed.

I truly enjoyed networking and connecting with so many brilliant individuals who are serious about growth, academically, mentally, and spiritually.

Culture. Connection. Community. We’re building something powerful. My campaign is rooted in listening to the real needs and challenges of my generation and serving as a bridge, ensuring our voices are represented, amplified, and respected in decision-making spaces.
