Know the Difference: E-Bikes vs. E-Motos

Not all electric two-wheelers are the same. Understanding the difference between an e-bike and an e-moto helps keep everyone safe and riding legally.

Wisconsin Statute § 340.01(15ph) defines the three classes of electric bicycles:
🔻Class 1 E-Bike – Pedal-assist only, with motor assistance up to 20 mph.
🔻Class 2 E-Bike – Equipped with a throttle and/or pedal assist, with motor assistance up to 20 mph.
🔻Class 3 E-Bike – Pedal-assist up to 28 mph. Riders must be at least 16 years old.

In Wisconsin, electric bicycles are treated much like traditional bicycles. They do not require registration, insurance, or a driver's license and are generally allowed anywhere bicycles are permitted. Wisconsin Statute § 346.806

E-Motos are different. If a vehicle exceeds Wisconsin's e-bike classification requirements, it may be considered a moped, motor-driven cycle, or motorcycle.

They are legal on public roads when the following are requirements are met:
🔻Registered and plated
🔻Insured
🔻Operated by a licensed driver

Before you ride, make sure you know what you're riding and where it's legal to ride it.
