Budgeting County Funds

We understand that how county funds are allocated is a matter of great importance to our community. As your county clerk, I want to take a moment to share how the budgeting process works, how decisions are made, and why transparency in this area is essential.

The budgeting of county funds is a comprehensive, year-long process that involves careful planning and oversight. It starts with gathering input from various departments, understanding the needs of our community, and making sure we are being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. Every dollar is allocated with the goal of delivering essential services and improving public infrastructure.

Our budget is designed to ensure that vital public services are properly funded. We also have to consider all other aspects of county needs, balancing short-term needs with long-term financial sustainability.

Each year, some of our expenses increase due to factors beyond our control, and it’s important to understand why. For example, the cost of fuel impacts everything from the vehicles used by our public safety department to the transportation of materials and supplies for county projects. As fuel prices rise, so does the cost of providing these services.

Insurance costs have risen significantly in recent years, largely due to two main factors. First, litigation and lawsuits have become more frequent, or settlements have increased, causing insurance providers to raise premiums to cover the added risk. This includes claims related to public safety, property damage, and other legal actions. Second, health insurance premiums for county employees continue to rise as healthcare costs increase across the country. We are committed to providing healthcare for our employees, and these rising premiums affect both the county’s budget and the financial wellbeing of our workforce.

Like any household or business, inflation also plays a role. The cost of goods and services increases each year, from supplies to the labor costs for county employees. Additionally, as our population grows, so does the demand for public services like law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency services. Maintaining and improving our infrastructure—roads, bridges, and public buildings—also requires ongoing investment to meet rising costs.

These factors are some of the main contributors to the increase in county expenses each year. We work diligently to manage these costs and ensure that funds are spent wisely.

One of our core values is transparency. We hold public meetings to review the proposed budget and welcome community input. It’s important that you, as our residents, know exactly how your money is being spent and have the opportunity to provide feedback. Accountability is key to maintaining trust, and we regularly review our spending to ensure that funds are being used as intended.

We are committed to ensuring that every dollar spent serves the community in the most efficient way possible. As part of this commitment, we regularly assess the effectiveness of funded programs and adjust when necessary to make sure taxpayer money is being maximized.

Your input is vital to making sure our county budget reflects the needs and priorities of our community. Together, we can continue to make our county a better place for all residents. We encourage you to attend public budget meetings, ask questions, and stay engaged in the financial decisions that impact us all. Please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns.
