Come find out more about what might have happened to the Roanoke colonists on Sunday at 3 in the Eagles School. This is a free History Speaks event and we do have air-conditioning!

Join us on Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. in the Eagles School for “HISTORY SPEAKS.” Charles Ewen, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at ECU,, and Tom Shields, Professor Emeritus of English at ECU, will speak about their book, "'Becoming the Lost Colony: The History, Lore and Popular Culture of the Roanoke Mystery,” winner of the 2026 James Deetz Book Award. Since Jamestown settler John Smith set out in search of the Roanoke settlers in 1608, ideas and theories of what happened to the Roanoke colony have captured the American imagination. Join us for a discussion of these theories and the historical contexts in which different ones became popular. Refreshments and a book signing will follow. Free event. 4570 County Home Rd., Greenville. The school is air-conditioned and there are restrooms on site.
