Pioneer Days pictures are here! Thank you Jake Schneider Photography for capturing this educational event. With around 600 fourth graders from all over the county, there are lots of thanks to be given.

From our volunteers to our teachers who brought them, we are incredibly grateful for everyone's cooperation to make this educational event a success. We were able to teach about our Historic Bear's Mill, making corn bread over a fire, early tools, tin smithing, and so much more. We are hopeful that every kid learned something new while they were here.

We'll see you next year!

Today is World Turtle Day! (We know we've done a lot of "world day" celebrating lately - they really should spread them out more) Enjoy this photo of our very own Eastern box turtle, Petunia, enjoying the heating light in her enclosure.

Did you know that Eastern box turtles can consume poisonous mushrooms? These toxins don't hurt the turtle, but they do accumulate in their skin and make them deadly if consumed by a human! Granted, we didn't recommend you ate them before that.

Today is World Bee Day 🐝! Bee together for people and the planet. A partnership that sustains us all.

With our upcoming Native Plant Sale on June 6th, it is the perfect time to tell you about why pollinators are so important.

"Bees are responsible for pollinating about one-third of the world’s food supply. In the United States, honey bees alone provide pollination services valued at $15 billion to $20 billion annually." (OSU)

Commercial beekeepers have been experiencing a rate of decline in their populations upwards of 30 percent each winter, with the historical loss rate being 10-15 percent. One of the largest causes for this decline is the increased use of pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides and urbanization.

So what can you do to help?

Plant Native! 🌱
Even if it is only a small portion of your yard, the bees don't mind. With the amount of urbanization and paved roads, a small patch of flowers can be incredibly beneficial to local bee populations. If you have a larger space, look into creating a pollinator patch for your local species.

Avoid using insecticides in your yard! 🦋
If absolutely necessary to use one, research the brands you intend to use to find which one is not harmful for bees. There are lists of these brands online that you can easily find. Watch your use of herbicides as well, as it kills the plants the bees need to survive.

We hope you will bee 🐝conscious of your habits this year while planting and maintaining your landscape!
