Did you know that this beautiful, historical cemetery surrounds the KLH house and grounds here at our Council headquarters?

When you are heading up to the parking lot, you can spot the cemetery on top of the hill and it continues around the house to the far side.

It’s one of the reasons every thing in our garden area is so quiet and peaceful!

We continue to make the rounds as our history is rich! Come see us soon, y’all.

A surprising number Greenville buildings have been moved over the years rather than being torn down. One of them is the Kilgore-Lewis house that in 1838 was originally built on land next to where Buncombe Street Methodist Church would build its sanctuary almost 40 years later (1870s). The home passed through generations of the Kilgore/Stokes/Lewis family until the last owner, Dorothy Lewis, died in 1973 and the family sold it to the church. A year later, the church needed more parking so it offered the house free to an organization that would move and preserve it for the public, which the Greenville Council of Garden Clubs did. It was moved to Academy St in 1974 and this shows after it arrived in place (on a hill!) compared to now. This is the only 1800s historic home in the downtown area that is preserved for the public to tour inside.

Heirloom seeds and plants are open pollinated and genetically diverse. They enable us to save and adapt our crops for flavor, productivity, disease resistance, and important regional and seasonal variations. Many hybrids are genetic clones adapted for agribusiness requirements to withstand harsh chemicals, uniformity, mechanical harvest, shipping, and storage...traits which don't allow us to save our own seeds or respect our cultural inheritance of carefully chosen seeds handed down from our ancestors. This is a great time of year to sit back with some herbal tea and explore seed catalogs. I will note a few of my favorites below. Please share your favorite heirloom & organic seed companies too. Enjoy exploring and planning for seeds of change on this wintry day!
