Reinvesting tourism tax dollars in 's events helps generate even greater economic impact.

City Council unanimously approved $2.4 million from the State Accommodations Tax Fund (ATAX) to support 20 tourism projects and events aimed at attracting visitors and filling hotel rooms across Greenville.

This year, the ATAX Committee took a more data-driven approach to its recommendations, using VisitGreenville SC's tourism impact software to evaluate projected visitation and economic impact.

"By taking a strategic, data-driven approach to funding future events & festivals, the City of Greenville and the ATAX Committee can maximize the impact of these resources," said Health Dillard, president and CEO of VisitGreenvilleSC. "Supporting programs that drive future visitation, strengthen local businesses and enhance the quality of life for Greenville residents."

Tourism generates more than $2.5 billion in annual economic impact in the Greenville area, underscoring the return on investment from ATAX-supported events and programs. See which projects and events received funding: https://heyor.ca/AX2kkZ

Novant Health celebrated the "topping out" of its hospital on Patewood Road with the placement of the final beam on the facility. It marks a significant milestone in the $132 million project, which will be its first hospital in South Carolina.

The milestone is the latest development in Novant’s continued entry into the Greenville market. Since announcing construction of the Patewood hospital in August of last year, the company has opened multiple clinics and urgent care facilities, as well as made a $45 million purchase of the former TD Bank property near Interstate 85.

Greenville’s economic story “is one of opportunity,” said City Manager Shannon Lavrin in her 2026 State of the City address, emphasizing Greenville’s intentional approach to growth.

"Our economic fundamentals remain strong," Lavrin said, "And we remain focused on purposeful, well-managed growth."

Greenville has grown by 10 percent over the past five years and annexed 60 properties totaling 395 acres, reinforcing the city’s commitment to strengthening business districts and guiding development with purpose.

Lavrin highlighted progress on major capital projects—including the a new West End parking garage, City Hall renovations, a Civic Design Center, the Downtown Ambassadors program, and a future Downtown Conference Center—which support a vibrant environment for commerce and community life.

City Council’s continued support for the façade improvement program and the return of the real estate breakfast are helping attract new business and strengthen the development community.

Greenville gained national visibility this year by hosting Top Chef and the Michelin Guide Awards, while 23 business ribbon cuttings underscored the city’s sustained economic momentum.

Successful downtowns don't happen by accident.

Located at the crossroads of Upper Main and Court Square, 's proposed City Hall renovation is designed to connect these two distinct downtown districts while creating a more welcoming civic presence on Main Street.

"This renovation embraces that overlap with purpose," said Mayor Knox White.

The result is a building that reflects the same intentional approach that has shaped the city's growth for decades: development that complements its surroundings, strengthens connections and enhances the overall downtown experience.

Investing in infrastructure to support neighborhoods and create connections to nearby businesses.

Councilman John DeWorken, Vice Chair of the GCEDC Board, cut the ribbon on a $2.1 million City investment that improves public safety, mobility and economic development.

"It’s been such a game changer for us having access to more shops, local restaurants and grocery stores,” said resident Savannah Harris who rolled past the event with a sleeping baby in a stroller.

DeWorken told the crowd of neighbors and business owners that the 0.8 mile sidewalk project along Chick Springs Road and Mohawk Drive includes stormwater upgrades, traffic calming measures, increased pedestrian lighting and additional on street parking.

"Sidewalks are much more than sidewalks," DeWorken said. "This area is a cut through to a major corridor. Now residents can feel safe walking to their destination."

When a city is willing to invest in itself and support growth, it sends a strong message to the private sector to do the same.

New renderings of the planned City Hall renovation reflect Greenville’s continued commitment to growth, accessibility and downtown vitality. The updated design creates a more open and connected civic space along Main Street while modernizing a 53-year-old building at the center of our community.

The project represents more than a renovation. It reflects Greenville’s continued investment in the infrastructure and public spaces needed to support the city’s next generation of growth.
