🚨 YOUR HELP IS NEEDED! 🚨

With a potential winter storm forecasted for this weekend, we’re asking our community for help keeping fire hydrants accessible.

Snow and ice can quickly bury hydrants, delaying firefighters during emergencies when every second matters.

👉 You can help by “adopting” a hydrant near your home or business:

✅ Clear snow at least 3 feet around the hydrant
✅ Create a path from the street to the hydrant
✅ Clear snow away from the caps and operating nut
✅ Do not pile shoveled snow on or around hydrants

🚫 Please do not open hydrants or remove caps — just clear the snow.

A few minutes of your time could make a life-saving difference for you and your neighbors.

Thank you for helping us keep our community safe and prepared this winter!

❄️ With the potential of winter weather impacting our area, the Hempfield Fire Department reminds residents to take extra precautions to stay safe before, during, and after the storm.

🚗 Travel Safety
• Avoid unnecessary travel whenever possible
• Slow down and increase following distance
• Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle — including the roof
• Keep an emergency kit in your car (blanket, flashlight, charger, water)

🏠 Home Heating Safety
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
• Never use grills, generators, or ovens indoors
• Ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly

⚡ Power Outage Preparedness
• Charge phones and backup batteries ahead of time
• Use flashlights instead of candles
• Safely operate generators outdoors only and away from windows and doors

❄️ Outdoor Safety
• Wear proper winter footwear
• Walk slowly on icy surfaces — short steps help prevent falls
• Dress in layers and limit time outdoors during extreme cold

🚒 Please Remember If roads are slippery for you, they are slippery for emergency responders as well. Please slow down and move over for emergency vehicles.

Your safety is our priority — before, during, and after the storm!

🥶 Extreme Cold Weather Safety Reminder

As dangerously cold temperatures continue across our area, the Hempfield Fire Department reminds residents to take extra precautions to stay safe.

🔥 Home Heating Safety
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
• Never use ovens or grills to heat your home
• Ensure vents and flues are clear of snow and ice

🏠 Prevent Frozen Pipes
• Allow faucets to drip slightly during extreme cold
• Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate
• Know where your main water shutoff is located

🚗 Travel Safety
• Limit travel when possible
• Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle
• Check on elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat

⚠️ Carbon Monoxide Awareness
• Ensure CO detectors are working on every level of your home
• Never run vehicles or generators inside garages or near windows

If you experience a heating emergency, fire, or medical issue — call 9-1-1 immediately.

Please stay warm, stay alert, and look out for one another during this period of extreme cold.
