Tactical Tip - EVs by Rail

When responding to a derailment or rail emergency involving auto carrier (aka auto rack) rail cars, consider the possibility they may contain new or used electric vehicles (EV) or hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). When loaded with EVs, the auto carrier rail cars will not be placarded with the DOT hazard class 9 placard.

The ER Playbook knowledge base and app includes guidance on responding to incidents involving electric vehicles and incidents involving rail cars including auto racks.

An annual ER Playbook subscription is free for response teams that purchase a HazMat/CBRN Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures course.
