The Hempfield Township Emergency Management Agency (HEMA) is always seeking new volunteers to compliment its staff. Even if you do not possess any emergency training, there is a position for you! Volunteers at HEMA come from all backgrounds and areas of expertise. While we all work together as a cohesive unit of Emergency Management; during non-emergency times we are artists, electricians, sales-p

ersons, stylists, DJ’s, utility workers, and a multitude of other professions! Some of the activities, other than emergency response, that volunteers can assist in are: planning, professional communications, shelter assistance, equipment and supply acquisition, maintenance, and HAM radio operations. There is no cost for training and most of the classes are self-paced and available online though the Independent Study website of FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (http://training.fema.gov/IS/). The HEMA staff meets regularly on the fourth Thursday of each month at the HEMA Building starting at 7PM, except for holidays. Feel free to stop by and learn more about Emergency Management and how you can contribute to your community. Our last post talked about the dangerously cold wind chill values that we expect Friday night into Saturday with our end-of-week storm. Here is an updated look at snow potential. The most snow is still projected to fall north of Pittsburgh. The trend in overall totals is a bit lower, but there is potential for intense snowfall rates as the changeover occurs on Friday. We are tracking this system closely, and we'll have more updates as the system approaches.

Widespread accumulating snow is expected Friday night into Saturday as low pressure crosses the area. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the PA/WV ridges where confidence in at least 6 inches of snow (Winter Storm Warning criteria) is highest. Additional Watch/Warning/Advisory headlines will likely be needed elsewhere across the area, so stay tuned for those later today or tonight.

Bottom line: If you need to travel late Friday night or Saturday morning, have a plan for potential impacts from snow on the roads.
