Fight the bite! Protect yourself from tick borne illnesses.

Ticks can sneak inside your home on your clothes. Remove any you find, then toss dry clothes in the dryer on high for 10 minutes. Washing first? Use hot waterโ€”cold or warm wonโ€™t kill ticks.

We used activities and games to teach campers attending Jacobs Creek Watershed Association's summer camp about nonpoint source pollution and its impact on our waterways. The students learned that it is much better to keep pollution from getting to our waterways than try to get it out of the water later.

To monitor the Cedar Creek restoration project that we completed last year, district staff collected, sorted, and identified macroinvertebrates found in the creek.

They collected mayflies, stoneflies, caddisflies, crane flies, riffle beetles, water pennies, and scuds. These are mostly pollution - intolerant species, which means that the restoration work is doing its job!

Here is an update on how the construction of a liquid manure storage tank is progressing at Pleasant Lane Farm near Latrobe.

This project is funded by Pennsylvania's Agriculture Conservation Assistance Program (ACAP) and the NRCS Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP).

Proper manure storage prevents runoff from coming in contact with manure, which protects our local waterways.

Our intern, Maddy Sosko, spent some time sprucing up the monument to Ann Rudd Saxman at the entrance to the county park that bears her name -- Ann Rudd Saxman Nature Park.

Ann was a botanist and horticultural designer who advocated for the preservation of open space. She also served for many years as an associate board member to the Westmoreland Conservation District.
