Due to Code Orange air quality for Wednesday, May 20th there is a Burn Ban effective immediately until Midnight Wednesday night for Guilford County.

A code ORANGE air quality alert has been issued for Wednesday, May 20 as concentrations of ground level ozone pollution are anticipated to reach levels that are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The Forsyth County Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection has declared a Code ORANGE Air Quality Action Day for the Triad Area, including Forsyth, Guilford, Alamance, Davidson, Randolph, Rockingham, Caswell, Davie and Stokes counties.

Due to anticipated high temperatures in the 90โ€™s, bright sunlight, low humidity and a relatively stagnant air mass, ground level ozone formation is expected to reach levels which are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups on Wednesday. Children, teenagers, older adults, people with heart and lung disease, and people who are active outdoors are all considered groups sensitive to ozone exposure. It is recommended that these groups limit prolonged or intense exertion outdoors and that they take frequent breaks.

Triad residents and businesses can help prevent ozone pollution levels from rising even further by driving less, avoiding engine idling, and staying home if possible. The use of gas-powered lawn equipment should also be postponed until the air quality alert is no longer in effect.

The burning of trash and other non-vegetative material is always prohibited, and open burning for disposal of leaves, brush, or other vegetation is banned until the alert is over. To continue monitoring the Air Quality forecasts for the Triad, visit www.forsyth.cc/eap.

BURN BAN Still in EFFECT for Guilford County. While the burn ban was lifted for other areas in the state, it remains in effect for our county and all neighboring counties. So NO open fires still until such time the burn ban is lifted for our county.

๐Ÿ•๏ธโ›บ๏ธWith the state-issued ban being lifted for 81 North Carolina counties, many of you are wondering about those campfires for upcoming camping trips.โ›บ๏ธ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

๐Ÿ“ŒIf you are camping in a state park or other state managed camping area in one of the 81 counties where the stateโ€™s ban has been removed, campfires would now be allowed.

๐Ÿ“ŒIf you are camping in a privately owned or managed campground in one of the 81 counties where the stateโ€™s ban has been removed, the same would apply. Campfires would now be allowed as long as there were no local restrictions or permitting requirements to abide by. Check with the place you intend to camp before assuming a fire is allowed.

๐Ÿ“Œ**UPDATE: Fire restrictions for Pisgah, Nantahala, Uwharrie and Croatan have been lifted by the USDA Forest Service as of May 4, 2026.**
If you are camping in a national forest anywhere in the state, campfires are not allowed outside of developed recreation sites. The USDA Forest Service enacted fire restrictions for all four national forests Wednesday, April 15. Until removed by the USDA Forest Service, those fire restrictions remain in effect for the Pisgah, Nantahala, Uwharrie and Croatan. For more information about the restrictions and what is allowed/not allowed: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r08/northcarolina/alerts/fire-restrictions-all-four-national-forests-north-carolina.

The N.C. Forest Service has lifted a ban on all open burning for 81 counties effective 8 a.m. Sunday, May 3. The statewide ban on open burning went into effect March 28 due to hazardous forest fire conditions, and the ban remains in effect for Alamance, Anson, Cabarrus, Chatham, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Moore, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stanly, Stokes and Union counties until further notice.

The lifting of the burn ban in 81 counties does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue or lift a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Just a reminder we are still under a state wide burn ban.

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

โ€œWhile the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,โ€ said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. โ€œEven the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.โ€

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.
