Earlier this week marked the fourth year of war in Ukraine. Members of the Ukrainian community and supporters from across North Carolina gathered at the State Capitol in Raleigh for a mass rally and candlelight vigil marking four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The event honored lives lost and recognized Ukrainian resilience, courage, and resistance. As candles were lit and flags waved, the message was clear: Ukraine’s fight is for freedom and the right of its people to exist.

NCASC’s Olga Vakulenko was proud to stand alongside her fellow Ukrainian community during this powerful commemoration. We are honored to support our neighbors and affirm that even thousands of miles away, North Carolina stands with Ukraine.

Four years later, the message remains clear: Ukraine is not alone. 💙💛

A new DHS policy could lead to the arrest and detention of refugees who are lawfully living in the United States — people who fled war, persecution, and violence to find safety here.

According to a recent court filing, refugees who do not complete their green card interview within one year may be detained and held in federal custody while their case is reviewed. They could be held indefinitely, and their original refugee status — already thoroughly vetted — may be questioned again.

These are families. Parents. Children. Community members. They followed the legal process. They rebuilt their lives. Now, they face the threat of detention and deportation.

We cannot allow those who came here seeking protection to be treated as if they do not belong.

Stand with refugees. Speak out. Share their stories. Advocate for policies that honor our commitment to protect those fleeing danger.

We join the nation in mourning the passing of Jesse Jackson, a lifelong champion of justice, dignity, and opportunity for all.

Rev. Jackson believed that those pushed to the margins deserve not only support, but a voice. That belief reflects our mission at NCASC — empowering refugees and immigrants to build safe, self-sufficient, and thriving lives in our community.

We honor his legacy by continuing the work: advocating, uplifting, and standing alongside those seeking hope and opportunity.

Rest in power, Rev. Jackson.

We recently celebrated RACE alumni scholars and peer mentors who earned their bachelor’s degrees at UNCG. Through our youth program, refugee students break through barriers to higher education with tutoring, mentorship, and community support.

Moments like these don’t happen by accident—and they don’t happen without sustained support. A share of the $95,000 December grant helps keep this proven program strong for current and future students.

Please vote for us to share in a $95,000 grant this month:

Every vote helps refugee students stay on the path to graduation. 💙
