Celebrating 16 Years of Elimu Empowerment
May 2010 – May 2026

Sixteen years ago, I stepped out in faith and founded Elimu Empowerment with a simple but powerful vision: to create pathways of hope, opportunity, and transformation for immigrant, refugee, and underserved communities.

What began in May 2010 as a calling rooted in service has grown into a vibrant organization committed to empowering individuals, strengthening families, and building resilient communities. Through every season, Elimu Empowerment has remained grounded in one unwavering belief:

EDUCATION IS THE CORNERSTONE OF ECONOMIC STABILITY AND A SACRED LIFE.

This truth has guided our work and shaped our mission to ensure that every person we serve has access to the tools, support, and opportunities needed to thrive with dignity and purpose.

As I reflect on these sixteen years, I am filled with gratitude. I think of the youth who came to us searching for support some still learning English who are now college graduates, professionals, and emerging leaders. I think of the families who found belonging, the women who discovered their voice and leadership, and the partnerships that have helped us expand our impact beyond what I once imagined.

Today, Elimu Empowerment stands proudly through four growing divisions that reflect our holistic commitment to community wellbeing:

ELIMU Youth Academy (formerly Elimu Learning Center) – nurturing educational excellence and leadership in our youth.
ELIMU Career Counseling & Employment Services (ECCES) – equipping individuals with guidance, workforce readiness skills, and pathways toward meaningful employment and economic empowerment.
Women of Africa Leadership Coalition (WALC) – uplifting women through leadership, sisterhood, and collective action.
ELIMU Community Health Resilient Model (ELIMU CHRM) – advancing health equity and building healthier, more resilient communities.

This journey has not always been easy, but it has been deeply meaningful. Every challenge has strengthened our resolve. Every success story has reminded us that transformation is possible when communities are supported with compassion, vision, and consistency.

To every student, parent, volunteer, donor, partner, and supporter who has walked alongside us thank you. Your trust and belief in this mission have made these sixteen years possible.

As we celebrate this milestone, we honor the past while looking boldly toward the future. The work continues, and so does our commitment to empowering minds, uplifting communities, and building lasting change for generations to come.

With deep gratitude and hope,

Holiday Message from Elimu Empowerment

As we enter this season of reflection, gratitude, and hope, we pause to celebrate the journey we have shared with our community.

This year marks 15 years of Elimu Empowerment serving as a pillar of education, empowerment, and support for individuals and families across our community. It is also a meaningful milestone as Women of Africa Leadership Coalition proudly celebrates 10 years of leadership development, connection, and collective growth.

Through our divisions
Elimu Learning Center,
Elimu Career Counseling & Employment Services, and
Women of Africa Leadership Coalition we have been honored to walk alongside individuals and families, providing education, career guidance, leadership opportunities, and supportive programming that strengthen lives and communities.

These milestones belong to all of us.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, partners, supporters, volunteers, and the individuals and families we serve. Your trust, collaboration, and continued support are the foundation of our work and the reason our impact continues to grow year after year.

As we celebrate these anniversaries and look ahead, we remain committed to serving with compassion, integrity, and purposebuilding pathways for growth, leadership, and opportunity in the years to come.

From all of us at Elimu Empowerment,
we wish you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a new year filled with peace, hope, and continued growth.

With heartfelt gratitude,
Esther Mwandiko Kitenge

A Weekend of Community, Culture & Connection

This past weekend, our Founder & CEO had the joy of spending time with the community at not one, but two powerful gatherings.

First Stop: The Community Resources Event hosted by the African Diaspora Coalition of Tennessee. This event was more than just an information hub it was a space where organizations, leaders, and neighbors came together to share resources, strengthen networks, and build bridges. It was a reminder of how important it is to stay connected, informed, and united as we work to empower our communities.

Second Stop: "One Picnic, Many Flavors" a celebration of culture, community, and connection hosted by Bastion Foundation, Inc.
This vibrant event highlighted the richness of diversity through food, music, and fellowship. It was beautiful to see families, friends, and neighbors gather in joy, laughter, and love, honoring the traditions that make our communities strong and resilient.

“Every time I step into spaces like these, I’m reminded of why community matters so deeply. It’s not just about attending events it’s about showing up, learning from one another, and celebrating the stories that connect us all.” – Esther Mwandiko Kitenge - Founder and CEO

At Elimu Empowerment, we believe that every moment of connection matters. Whether it’s sharing resources or celebrating cultures, these gatherings remind us of the importance of showing up, leaning in, and building meaningful relationships.

We are grateful for the opportunity to take part in these spaces and for everyone who continues to make community engagement a priority. Here’s to more moments that bring us together and strengthen the bonds that unite us.

Happy 15th Anniversary Elimu Empowerment!
We are celebrating 15 years of Breaking Down Barriers So Refugees Can Thrive in The United States of America!
I would love to take this opportunity to thank everyone who in one way or another has contributed to our journey. Here's to continued success and growth in the years to come!

15 years ago, we began a journey to empower refugees, asylees, immigrants and parolees by using the education, leadership training, career counseling, mentorship, social integration, and employment services to create an environment where participants are evolve into successful contributing members of society. We've faced challenges and celebrated victories, all thanks to your hard work and dedication. Here's to the next chapter!

We've made a difference in Refugee Youth using Elimu Learning Center Division and Women of color Health Disparities using Women of Africa Leadership Coalition WALC Division for 15 years. We are proud of what we've achieved and look forward to continuing to serve this community!

15 years of collaboration with different entities like North Carolina A&T State University, Guilford College, American Friends Service Committee, Greater Greensboro Community Foundation, The Village, and Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to name the least with innovation, and growth!
