How does historic preservation strengthen cities and towns? How does storytelling promote equity and showcase a community’s diversity?

Get the answers by attending "Telling the Complete Story: Preserving African American History & Heritage" from 9 am to 3 pm Wednesday, May 15, at the Greensboro History Museum, 130 Summit Ave.

The full-day event features local and state experts talking about these subjects and sharing their success stories. The day’s programming includes a mobile tour of Greensboro’s unique historic preservation program. The City Planning Department’s 2023 summary of growth and development in Greensboro, called “Growing Greensboro,” is now available at www.greensboro-nc.gov/2023Infographic.

Key findings include:
• 5,062 potential housing units were approved in 2023 through rezoning and the annexation process throughout the city.
• That brings the three-year total of potential housing units approved from 2021-23 to nearly 16,000.
• 92 percent of the potential housing units approved were for multi-family residential units.

“More people will be calling Greensboro home over the next few years as these projects come out of the ground,” said City Planning Department Director Sue Schwartz. “We are truly ‘GreensBooming’ in every way.”

The City Planning Department’s annual report on a variety of key economic measures is now available at www.greensboro-nc.gov/TrendsReport.

Key findings include:
• The value of construction as measured by City-issued building permits hit a historic mark of more than $1 billion, a 37 percent increase from 2022.
• The number of jobs in Greensboro and the average annual pay of jobs has increased by 2.3 percent and 4 percent respectively. The data is from 2022, the most recent available.
• The record-breaking numbers of development reviews in 2020 and annexations in 2022 have returned to the trendline/normal/average numbers.
