The Greenlawn Fire District is located in the center of the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. The approximately 4-square-mile area encompasses Greenlawn, as well as parts of the hamlets of Elwood and Huntington. The district is home to roughly 15,000 residents, as well as a wide variety of properties ranging from health and elder care facilities to industrial and manufac

turing businesses; from houses of worship and restaurants to a Long Island Railroad Station; and from an animal shelter to 6 public schools. This diverse district is protected by the 125 active members of the Greenlawn Volunteer Fire Department; friends and neighbors who have the desire to serve and the ability to help. Founded in 1902, the Greenlawn Volunteer Fire Department continues to be a cornerstone of the Greenlawn community. The Firefighters, Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics of the Department provide emergency fire and medical response from two stations; GFD Headquarters, located on Boulevard Avenue and Station #1, located on Little Plains Road. These dedicated men and women undergo hundreds of hours of training in order to provide the best service possible to those in need, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The GFD is proud to be one of the few remaining all volunteer departments in the region.

On March 29th at approximately 2:45 AM, the volunteers of the Greenlawn Fire Department were activated for multiple calls reporting a residential structure fire.

Quickly on the road were Chief of Department Joseph Pace, 1st Assistant Chief Richard Jones, and 2nd Assistant Chief Matthew Paulsen.

Upon arrival, 1st Assistant Chief Richard Jones was met with a single-story private dwelling with heavy fire in the attached garage and significant extension into the residence. A working fire assignment was transmitted, prompting the activation of mutual aid resources.

First due was Headquarters Rescue Quint 2-7-2, led by Lieutenant Mitch Lipman. Upon arrival, crews stretched an inch-and-three-quarter handline to the garage while additional members conducted primary searches of the residence.

Second due was Headquarters Engine 2-7-7, which secured a positive water supply for 2-7-2 and stretched a second handline into the structure to support an aggressive interior fire attack.

All interior operations were conducted under the command of 1st Assistant Chief Richard Jones, with overall incident command held by Chief of Department Joseph Pace.

Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Halesite, Centerport, Huntington, Huntington Manor, and Northport Fire Departments.

All units operated for approximately two hours before returning to service. No injuries were reported.

This month, the Greenlawn Fire Department is proud to recognize Rescue Squad Captain Karen Reim as our Member of the Month.

Karen began her career in September of 1980 as a volunteer EMT with the Huntington Community First Aid Squad, where she has continued to serve with dedication and passion. Over the years, Karen has developed a deep love not only for serving the community, but also for supporting and mentoring those around her.

In May of 2018, while continuing her service with Huntington Community, Karen joined the Greenlawn Fire Department, following in the footsteps of her son, Michael Reim. Alongside Karen in the department is her husband, Richard Reim, who also proudly serves as a member of the Greenlawn Fire Department. Together, they represent a strong family commitment to volunteer service and community involvement.

From the moment she joined, Karen’s impact within the department grew tremendously. She has long been known as a mother figure to many of our junior members. Whether she is teaching them how to become stronger EMS providers, helping them work through difficult challenges, or simply making a phone call to check in and make sure everything is alright, Karen has always been someone our members can count on.

Her leadership within the department quickly became evident. In November of 2018, Karen was elected Lieutenant of the Greenlawn Fire Department Rescue Squad, later advancing into her current role as Rescue Squad Captain.

Karen’s list of accomplishments speaks to her commitment and dedication to the emergency services. In 2025, she received the Mark Levee Rescue Squad Award for her dedicated service. That same year, she was recognized for 45 years of membership with the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. In May of 2022, she was honored with the New York State Distinction Award, and in 2020, Captain Reim was recognized as the Engine Company Member of the Year.

Thank you, Captain Reim, for all that you do. Your hard work, leadership, and dedication to both our department and the community do not go unnoticed.

During this blizzard, the volunteers of the Greenlawn Fire Department remain in-house and ready to respond to the needs of our community.

While many are staying warm indoors, our members are standing by at both stations to ensure uninterrupted emergency coverage throughout the duration of the storm.

We urge all residents to use extreme caution and follow these important winter safety tips:

• Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary to allow plows and emergency vehicles to operate safely.
• Clear snow from fire hydrants near your home to ensure quick access in an emergency.
• Shovel safely — take frequent breaks, push snow instead of lifting when possible, and avoid overexertion.
• Check on elderly neighbors and family members to ensure they have heat and necessary supplies.
• Keep vents and exhaust pipes clear of snow, especially for furnaces and generators, to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
• Use generators outdoors only and never inside a home, garage, or enclosed space.

In the event of an emergency, dial 9-1-1 immediately.

Stay safe. Stay warm. Stay prepared.

This morning, the volunteers of the Greenlawn Fire Department were out and about doing what we do best.

Our Sunday started the way it normally does — Firematic Probie practice at Station 1 and Rescue Probie practice at Headquarters, both beginning in the early morning hours. Training never stops, and neither do we.

While our newest members were sharpening their skills, the department continued to answer the call. Between 6:30 AM and 4:00 PM, Greenlawn volunteers responded to 11 alarms for service — including 6 ambulance calls and 5 fire calls.

No matter the time, the weather, or the schedule, the volunteers of the Greenlawn Fire Department remain ready to serve this community 24/7/365.
