For the last week or so, we have been reporting on the issue of power failure. Duke sent follow up information regarding the outage concerns of the I and J blocks. Earlier this week, Duke’s Senior Engineering Technologist visited the site to conduct an on-ground inspection along a significant stretch of the rear lot lines. During the walkthrough, the specific tree responsible for the outage on 5/8 was identified—a large oak, from which a branch had split and brought down the wires as well as damaged the pole.

The last scheduled vegetation trimming for this area was completed in 2024, as part of Duke’s standard five-year maintenance cycle. While inspecting, their technologist observed that no vegetation was currently growing into or near the power lines. However, there are numerous mature trees throughout the area, both within and outside the right-of-way, which stand well above the pole lines and could potentially impact the system if they break.

Importantly, the inspection did not reveal any dead or dangerous trees in the vicinity and the lines are trimmed within their vegetation management standards. This should provide some reassurance regarding the ongoing management of vegetation, but Duke will continue to monitor these mature trees as part of their reliability efforts.

A big thanks to Duke Energy for researching the issue and supplying this information!

JUST FYI:

In case you see a car driving slowly through town, and stopping periodically to look closer at our trees, we wanted you to know it is our Village Arborist. She is working on the annual assessment of all Village-owned trees, as well as the more in-depth assessment of the trees in the B-block.

IN CASE YOU WONDERED:

There was a power outage on 5/8/26 at 4:45 a.m. due to a tree that broke a pole, taking down wires and damaging the pole. The location was behind 137 Julep Ln. When trouble crews arrived, they restored the wire and temporarily made the pole safe before re-energizing the tap at 7:20 a.m. for a total duration of 155 min.

Later that morning, at 10:20 a.m., district crews opened the fuse for safety so the damaged pole could be replaced. Once the pole replacement was completed, the fuse was closed back in at 2:00 p.m. (219 min.).

Over the past two years, a number of our residents experienced a total of four sustained outages, with the most recent two events occurring on 5/8/26. The other two outages were quite sometime ago:

• 9/27/24 – Tree fell into the lines during storm event.
• 5/24/25 – Pole fire caused by a squirrel

As reported yesterday, Duke had a team in the area to flag any potential tree issues. If any were found, they will be referring them to their Vegetation Management team for follow up.

Duke feels this is not anything out of the ordinary in terms of the number of outages in a two-year period. They are continually working to improve and maintain the power grid to enhance service reliability for customers, but cannot guarantee there will be no outages.

Just a heads-up for residents in our I and J blocks: Duke Energy will have a team in the area today to flag any potential tree issues that could interfere with power lines. The entire tap is rear lot fed, which generally presents more challenges when it comes to vegetation management especially if trees that are to be maintained by property owners die and then fall into the easement areas. Any flagged areas of concern will be referred to Duke's Vegetation Management team for follow up.
