The Greenfield Fire Territory was established as Greenfield Fire Department in 1894 to serve the citizens of Greenfield. The fire territory was established between the City of Greenfield and Center Township, Hancock County to better serve all citizens. Greenfield Fire provides fire, technical rescue, advanced life support medical services, and hazardous materials response to the citizens we serve.

Our certified inspectors inspect every business and school in our area to make sure all workplaces are safe for the employees and students. The Greenfield Fire Territory is also active with the schools in our response area with severe weather lessons and fire safety week in October.

🇺🇸 This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Their sacrifice is the reason we enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted. Today, we remember those who never made it home and the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

From all of us at the Greenfield Fire Territory, thank you to our fallen heroes. We will never forget.

Yesterday morning, we had the opportunity to sit down and share breakfast with our retirees. It’s always a privilege to spend time with the men and women who helped pave the way for our department.

Hearing their stories, experiences, and lessons learned is invaluable to our crew members and serves as a reminder of the strong foundation they built before us.

Thank you to everyone who came out and shared part of your journey with us. We truly appreciate your continued support and the legacy you’ve left within our department.

Crews from the Greenfield Fire Territory, alongside multiple mutual aid agencies from Hancock County and surrounding counties, remain on scene of a commercial vehicle fire on I-70 involving approximately 32,000 pounds of lithium-ion batteries being transported by the commercial vehicle.

Due to the size and complexity of the incident, 38 apparatus from numerous agencies are currently operating on scene. All Hancock County fire agencies, Shelbyville Fire Department, Moral Township Fire Department, South Madison Fire Department, along with Indianapolis Fire Department, are assisting with fire suppression, station coverage, and support operations while firefighters continue working to contain and extinguish the blaze.

Eastbound lanes remain shut down at this time. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area, expect significant delays, and use caution around emergency personnel operating on the interstate.

A big thank you to the Greenfield Parks and Recreation Preschool for inviting us to come and speak with the kids about fire safety! We had a great time showing them what firefighters wear during a fire, teaching important fire safety tips, and giving them a close-up look at Tanker 421.

Thank you again for having us! We always enjoy opportunities to connect with the community and help educate our future fire safety experts! 🚒🧯

At approximately midnight last night, Greenfield Fire Territory and mutual aid departments were dispatched to a structure fire off of Grant Street.

The homeowner was awakened by a smoke alarm and came downstairs to find fire in the corner of the kitchen. The fire was extinguished using the kitchen sprayer prior to crews arriving on scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke throughout the structure extending to the second floor, along with charring to the kitchen walls and ceiling. Crews checked for fire extension and ventilated the home to remove smoke.

The homeowner was treated on scene and released.

This serves as an important reminder: if you discover a fire in your home, call 911 immediately and evacuate. Attempting to extinguish a fire yourself can be extremely dangerous, and remaining inside a structure with fire and smoke can quickly become life-threatening.

Today feels like it carries a little extra meaning.

It’s May 4th — a day about courage, standing up for what’s right, and being a light in the darkness. And it’s also National Firefighters Day — a moment to recognize the real-life heroes who do exactly that every single day.

Firefighters don’t wear capes, but they run toward danger when everyone else is running away. They show up in the hardest moments, bringing strength, skill, and compassion when it matters most.

So today, we honor the bravery, sacrifice, and heart of firefighters everywhere. Thank you for protecting our communities, for your selflessness, and for being the calm in the chaos.

May the 4th be with those who serve — on screen and in real life. ❤️🔥
