Scott Larsen remembers the morning his dad said goodbye.

He was sitting at the kitchen table, just 4 years old, watching his father head off to work at his Queens firehouse.

He never came home.

FDNY firefighter Scott Andrew Larsen was one of 343 members of the department killed when the Twin Towers fell.

His son, and namesake, was left to grow up without him.

Two days after the attack, his little brother August was born.

He never got to meet their dad at all.

"I feel like we just don't bring it up because we don't want to get each other upset," Larsen said.

"He never even got to meet him."

Now 29, Larsen wears the same uniform his father did.

He sought out and got assigned to Ladder 163, his dad's old company in Woodside, Queens. His father's name is on the wall. His photo hangs in the break room.

"His memory comes up every day, honestly. There is never a day I come here and I don't look at him."

He's not alone.

Fifty-eight children of FDNY firefighters killed on 9/11 have followed the same path into the department.

Larsen's own brother just passed the entrance exam, hoping to join next year — a third generation carrying the family name into the firehouse.

"I look exactly like my father... everything from the beauty marks on my face," he said.

Twenty-five years later, guys at the firehouse still stop him to say the same thing: his dad was a good man.

Twenty-five years.

A whole generation has grown up not knowing a world before that day.

Labor Day wasn’t created because someone thought working people deserved a three-day weekend. It exists because workers stood together and fought. They fought for fair wages. Safer workplaces. Reasonable hours. Benefits. A voice on the job. And the basic belief that the people doing the work deserve a seat at the table. None of it was handed to them.

And here in Wisconsin, we know better than most that those rights can never be taken for granted.

Firefighters and paramedics across this state report for duty every day ready to protect our communities. We run toward fires. We care for the sick and injured. We work nights, weekends and holidays. We miss birthdays, dinners and time with our families because when someone calls 911, somebody has to answer. But our service should never be used as an excuse to tell us to stay quiet when it comes to our rights as workers.

We will fight for safe staffing. We will fight for fair wages and benefits. We will fight for retirement security and protections for firefighters who develop cancer, heart disease, PTSD and other job-related illnesses and injuries. We will fight for collective bargaining and a meaningful voice in the workplace. And we will stand beside the working men and women across Wisconsin fighting those same battles.

There will always be people who tell workers they are asking for too much. History tells a different story. Nearly every protection working people have today exists because somebody before us was willing to stand up and demand better. That responsibility belongs to us now.

So on Labor Day, we honor the workers who came before us; but honoring them isn’t enough. We keep fighting. For our members. For our families. For the next generation of firefighters and paramedics. And for working people across Wisconsin.

Happy Labor Day from the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin.

United we bargain. United we fight. United we move forward.
