Oh, how we've changed, YET stayed the same ... this Greencastle, IN postcard from the PCPL Archive (mailed in 1928) shows the busy intersection of Washington & Indiana Street, looking east. The corner buildings are the same in 2026, but the details have changed!
The bank building (north corner, left) was the First National Bank, most recently the Old National Bank. Built in 1871, it was extensively remodeled in 1918.
The building on the right (south corner) was occupied by Greek's Candy Store (1909-1930). This corner then held Kroger's, later PREVO'S, and now Starbucks. Also, notice the tall curbs above brick streets and the traffic signal in the middle of the intersection in 1928!
What do you remember from this busy corner of the Putnam County Courthouse Square? Visit the PCPL Archive to learn more about how Putnam County, Indiana has changed ... and stayed the same!!
