Today's signing went super well! Here is the proclamation that was signed, designating May as Mental Health Awareness Month:
WHEREAS, Mental Health America established Mental Health Month in 1949, uniting millions each May to promote awareness, provide resources, and advocate for the mental well-being of all; and
WHEREAS, maintaining good mental health is vital to overall health and well-being, and mental health conditions are common, manageable, and treatable; and
WHEREAS, one in five people will experience a mental health condition in any given year, all community members manage their mental health every day, and about half of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives, with symptoms often beginning by age 14; and
WHEREAS, individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives; and
WHEREAS, small steps toward balance, connection, and self-kindness truly matter; and
WHEREAS, meaningful and impactful Community Action is being done in our community for Recovery, Empowerment, and Support in education, access, collaboration, advocacy, support services and prevention activities surrounding mental health and substance misuse conditions; and
WHEREAS, each business, school, government agency, healthcare provider, organization and citizen shares the obligation to recognize and destigmatize mental health conditions as well as the responsibility to promote mental wellness and support prevention efforts.
THEREFORE I, Linda Dunbar, Greencastle Mayor, do hereby proclaim May 2026 as
Mental Health Awareness Month
in the City of Greencastle, and call upon all citizens, residents, and institutions to recommit our community to increasing awareness and improving access to care; and ensure every citizen has the opportunity to thrive, call upon all residents to commit to the following actions:
· Support mental health advocacy and services.
· Take action by using free screening tools at mhascreening.org.
· Educate themselves on treatments and well-being strategies.
· Challenge Stigma through open, compassionate conversations.
· Seek Help and advocate for expanded mental health resources.
