🌟 FEATURE ’EM FRIDAY — EMS WEEK EDITION 🌟

As EMS Week comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment to recognize several members of the Putnam County EMS family for achievements and recognitions received this week at the State level.

Several members of the PCEMS family were honored through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security EMS Week Recognition Program for their impact on EMS, their coworkers, and the communities they serve:

🚑 Shift Lieutenant Kylee Harrington — recognized for her leadership, mentorship, and commitment to building a supportive and connected team environment while continuing to advocate for both patients and providers.

🚑 EMT Steve Caulkins — recognized for his dependable service, teamwork, dedication to public safety, and willingness to always step up when help is needed.

🚑 Lieutenant Sam Deaner — recognized for decades of steady leadership, reliability, professionalism, and commitment to serving Putnam County through EMS.

🚑 EMT Stefanie Thompson — recognized for her innovation, creativity, operational improvement efforts, and dedication to supporting both providers and patient care through problem-solving and agency development.

Additionally, we want to congratulate Chief Kelly Russ on being named the Indiana EMS Association’s 2026 Leader of the Year at last weekend’s Golden Sirens Banquet. This award recognizes leadership, advocacy, provider support, and dedication to advancing EMS across Indiana. Through statewide and national advocacy, organizational leadership, workforce development, grant acquisition, and community partnerships, Chief Russ continues to help position PCEMS as a progressive and forward-thinking rural EMS agency focused on long-term sustainability and supporting both providers and the communities we serve.

We also want to congratulate Chief Anthony Taylor on successfully passing his board certification examination this week to become a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN). This accomplishment reflects Anthony’s continued dedication to professional development, education, operational excellence, and strengthening emergency care within our organization. Anthony was also recognized this week by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security during their EMS Week Recognition Program.

To have so many members of one rural EMS agency recognized during EMS Week is something truly special. These honors reflect the culture, dedication, professionalism, and heart of the people serving Putnam County every single day.

To all of our providers, support staff, leadership, partners, and families — thank you for everything you do. We are incredibly proud of this team and grateful for the opportunity to serve this community together. 💙🚑

This EMS Week, Putnam County EMS was honored to receive recognition from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security — but the recognition didn’t stop with us.

Several of our regional partners and emergency service agencies were also recognized during EMS Week 2026, and we believe that says something incredibly important about Putnam County and the surrounding region: we are surrounded by some of the very best emergency responders in the State of Indiana.

From our fire departments, to our air medical partners at Ascension St. Vincent StatFlight Indianapolis StatFlight 4, to law enforcement, dispatchers, hospital staff, and EMS providers across the county — the level of professionalism, teamwork, training, and dedication shown every single day in this community is something special.

In Putnam County, emergency response is not about competition. It is about collaboration. It is about neighbors helping neighbors. It is about agencies training together, responding together, and standing beside one another on people’s worst days.

The recognition awarded this week reflects years of hard work, strong leadership, and a commitment to serving our communities with excellence. Rural healthcare and emergency response come with challenges, but this county continues to prove that small communities can deliver world-class emergency services.

To every responder, provider, firefighter, dispatcher, flight crew member, nurse, deputy, officer, administrator, and volunteer who helps keep Putnam County safe — thank you. 🚑 Through Every Storm 🚑

As we celebrate National EMS Week, this photo feels especially fitting.

Over the past several months, Putnam County EMS has weathered what truly felt like a “fleet storm” — delayed ambulance deliveries, major maintenance challenges, accidents, blown engines, and the constant challenge of keeping a rural EMS system moving 24/7/365.

But despite the storm clouds above us, we’re proud to say the storm is finally beginning to clear.

We have officially received the ambulance we ordered, completing a major milestone for our frontline fleet. Today, every frontline ambulance in service is now either:
• brand new
• equipped with a new engine
• or remounted onto a brand-new chassis

That level of reliability matters for our crews and for the community we serve.

During EMS Week, we’re especially grateful:

* to our crews, who continued adapting and answering the call through every challenge
* to our fleet maintenance service partners who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep us up and running to the best of their abilities
* and to the surrounding EMS agencies and public safety partners who loaned ambulances and supported our service when we needed it most

This is what the EMS community does — we help each other through the storm.

Thank you to our community for continuing to support EMS and the people behind it.

Happy EMS Week from Putnam County EMS! 🚑

Today’s EMS Week theme is Education Day — highlighting the importance of public education and continuing education for EMS professionals.

At PCEMS, learning never stops. From CPR classes and community outreach to advanced medical training and hands-on simulations, our crews are constantly working to sharpen their skills and better serve Putnam County.

We also believe education saves lives outside the ambulance. Whether it’s CPR, Stop the Bleed, fall prevention, or public safety education, empowering our community matters just as much as responding to emergencies.

Thank you to all the educators, preceptors, instructors, healthcare partners, and EMS professionals who help keep our communities safe and our providers prepared.

And to our crews — thank you for always striving to learn, grow, and provide the best care possible. 💙🚑

🌟 Feature ’em Friday 🌟

This week we’re proud to feature Stephen Caulkins!

Steve has been serving as an EMT since 2012, with 5 years at Putnam County EMS. He is also a longtime member of Cloverdale Township Fire Department, where he has served since 2002, and additionally works part-time with the Greencastle Fire Department. His dedication to public safety and the communities of Putnam County is something that truly stands out.

What Steve enjoys most about EMS is being able to provide care for the residents of Putnam County — something he does with compassion, professionalism, and a willingness to always step up when needed.

Last year, Steve was recognized for those qualities when he was awarded EMT of the Year at the Indiana Fire Chiefs Association Emergency Response Conference — a well-deserved honor for someone who consistently goes above and beyond for both patients and coworkers alike.

Around the station, Steve is known as someone who is always willing to help, never hesitates to jump into a task, and can always be counted on when something needs done. Simply put — Steve is just a genuinely good dude, and we’re lucky to have him on our team.

Outside of work, Steve enjoys spending time with his wife Felicia and their children Hailey, Carson, Mason, Tysohn, Maelah, and Paisley. He’s also a proud cat owner to Aerial and Hallie 🐱. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, golfing, watching The Office, and, in his words, annoying his wife.

His favorite sweet treat? Raspberry flavored anything 🍓

Steve, thank you for your years of service, leadership, and the positivity you bring to PCEMS every day. We appreciate everything you do for this agency and this community 💙🚑

Today, International Nurses Day, we recognize and celebrate the nurses who dedicate their lives to caring for others in some of life’s most difficult moments.

The date is observed each year on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, whose work during the Crimean War helped revolutionize patient care, sanitation practices, and the foundation of modern nursing as we know it today. Her legacy continues to shape healthcare systems across the world and serves as a reminder of the compassion, advocacy, and professionalism that nurses bring to their communities every single day.

At Putnam County EMS, we are incredibly fortunate to work alongside outstanding nurses throughout our region. From the emergency departments and inpatient units, to flight medicine and specialty care, your partnership plays a critical role in the continuum of patient care.

We would especially like to recognize and thank the teams we work closely with every day at Ascension St. Vincent StatFlight Indianapolis, Putnam County Hospital - Greencastle, Indiana, and Hendricks Regional. Your dedication, teamwork, and commitment to our patients never go unnoticed.

We are also proud to have two nurses serving within our own organization, helping bridge prehospital medicine and nursing care to strengthen the services we provide to our community.

To all nurses — thank you for the sacrifices you make, the compassion you show, and the lives you impact every day. Happy International Nurses Day from all of us at Putnam County EMS.

Over the past two weeks, Putnam County EMS has had the honor of providing CPR training to every deputy, reserve deputy, Chief Deputy Sutherlin, and Sheriff Baugh with the Putnam County Sheriffs Office Indiana.

Strong public safety systems are built through teamwork, preparation, and a shared commitment to serving our community. By ensuring law enforcement officers are trained and confident in life-saving CPR skills, we continue strengthening the chain of survival for the citizens of Putnam County.

Cardiac emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time, and often the first person on scene is a law enforcement officer. The willingness of these deputies and leaders to dedicate time to this training reflects their commitment to protecting the people they serve far beyond traditional law enforcement duties.

It is truly an honor for our crews to work alongside such dedicated professionals and to play a role in helping equip them with skills that can save lives when seconds matter most. We are grateful for the continued partnership between Putnam County EMS and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department as we work together to keep our community safe.

We are back with our 🌟 Feature ’em Friday 🌟

This week we’re excited to feature Shift Lt. Zephaniah Skarsgard!

Zeph has been serving in EMS for nearly 10 years, and has been part of the Putnam County EMS family since May of 2021. What Zeph enjoys most about PCEMS is working alongside supportive leadership, being part of a smaller department, progressive protocols, and of course — the famous 24/72 schedule.

Outside of work, Zeph is an extremely creative and enjoys spending time on various mediums of artistic expression, performance, and digital artwork. At home, Zeph is kept company by three cats: Zelda, Midna, and one especially opinionated feline with a very spicy name. 🐱

When it comes to ice cream, Zeph keeps it classic with mint chocolate chip — especially if it has brownies mixed in. 🍦

Zeph, thank you for your dedication to EMS and for being part of the PCEMS team. We appreciate the personality, perspective, and care you bring to the workplace every day 💙🚑

🧠🚑❤️ BIG NEWS FOR PUTNAM COUNTY EMS ❤️🚑🧠

Putnam County EMS is proud to announce that we have been nationally recognized by the American Heart Association with the Mission: Lifeline® EMS Bronze Achievement Award!

This award recognizes our team’s commitment to delivering rapid, evidence-based care for patients experiencing heart attacks and strokes—when every second truly matters.

When you call 911, our crews don’t just transport—you receive critical, life-saving care immediately, often up to an hour sooner than if arriving by private vehicle. Mission: Lifeline® EMS is a national initiative focused on strengthening the entire system of care—from the moment 911 is called through hospital treatment—ensuring patients receive the right care at the right time.

💬 “Arguably the most important link in the chain of survival for stroke and cardiac emergencies is EMS,” said Dr. Kacey Kronenfeld of the American Heart Association.

💬 “The Mission: Lifeline program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work every day so patients have the best possible chance of survival,” said Chief of EMS Operations Anthony Taylor.

We are incredibly proud of our team and grateful to serve Putnam County with the highest level of care. This recognition reflects the dedication, training, and teamwork our providers bring to every call.

🌟 Feature ’em Friday 🌟

This week, we’re excited to feature Shift Lieutenant Kylee Harrington!

Kylee has been serving in EMS for about 8 years, all of them right here with Putnam County EMS. What keeps her passionate about the job is the strong connection to the community, the close working relationships with law enforcement, and the family that’s been built within PCEMS — especially with her shift and leadership team.

Outside of work, Kylee’s life is full and busy. She’s married to her favorite person (who also happens to be a first responder), and together they’re raising two girls. Their family enjoys camping and is hoping to upgrade to a new camper this coming year. She’s also the proud owner of a dog named Rocky — and, as Kylee puts it, her dog has a cat named Cat 🐶🐱. In addition to her personal life, Kylee is also heavily involved with the First Responder Wellness Foundation which is a non-profit organization that helps connect first responders with mental health resources.

Her go-to comfort treat? Chocolate chip cookie dough 🍪 — a classic.

And if Kylee ever makes the newspaper… don’t be surprised if the photo of her in a trash can makes the cut — she says it’s guaranteed. 😄

Kylee, thank you for your leadership, dedication, and the humor you bring to PCEMS every day. We’re grateful to have you leading from the front 💙🚑
