Seedskadee and Cokeville Meadows National Wildlife Refuges

Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge is 27,230 acres surrounding 36 river miles of the Green River in southwest Wyoming. The Refuge has riparian, wetland, and upland habitats that are managed to provide wildlife habitat and support wildlife-dependent public recreational opportunities. The Green River is an oasis that bisects the vast high desert sagebrush plains of southwest Wyoming. Seedskadee NWR

supports a wide variety of wildlife: songbirds, greater sage-grouse, trumpeter swans, shorebirds, ducks, geese, deer, elk, moose, coyotes, fox, skunks, raccoons, beaver, small mammals, bats, and many different species of fish. Cokeville Meadows National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) lies in the high-elevation Bear River Valley of southwestern Wyoming and has an approved acquisition boundary of 26,657 acres, though only 9,259 acres have been purchased, leased or protected through conservation easements to date. (Refuge land acquisition is ongoing, though only through willing sellers.) Cokeville Meadows NWR is centered around 20 miles of the Bear River and was created to (1) to provide inviolate sanctuary for migratory birds, and (2) for the conservation of riparian habitats and wetlands to maintain the public benefits they provide and to help fulfill international obligations contained in various migratory bird treaties and conventions. Cokeville Meadows National Wildlife Refuge contains a mosaic of wet meadows and cattail-bulrush sloughs, which provide nesting habitat for 32 water bird species and migration habitat for waterfowl and other water birds. These riparian habitats are also important nesting habitat for songbirds, as well as feeding sites for broods of greater sage-grouse. In addition, wet meadows and uplands at the Refuge are critical winter habitat for greater sage-grouse and large mammals such as mule deer, elk, and pronghorn.

River flows below Flaming Gorge and Glen Canyon dams will begin changing April 23 as drought response operations start in the Colorado River Basin.

Under the 2026 Drought Response Operations Plan, up to 660,000 acre-feet to 1 million acre-feet of water will be released from Flaming Gorge to Lake Powell through April 2027. To move that water downstream, flows on the Green River will increase. Releases are expected to average about 2,000 cfs through April 30, 2026, and may rise to roughly 4,600 cfs after that.

At the same time, Lake Powell will reduce releases by 1.48 MAF (from 7.48 MAF down to 6.0 MAF) to Lake Mead, resulting in lower flows below Glen Canyon Dam. Those releases are expected to average about 7,000 cfs, with daily fluctuations between 6,000 and 8,000 cfs.

We will continue to share updates as operations move forward. Please note, flows are highly dynamic and may keep changing as real-time operations adjust.

More information on river flows will be provided soon. For more details, visit: https://www.usbr.gov/newsroom/news-release/5326

The wind blew in a little crew of ten or so curlews last week at Cokeville Meadows NWR. Mixed in with the wind you can hear the distinctive call of the curlews. Spring visitors are the best:)

The Trumpeter Swans of Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge: A dam mitigation and Trumpeter Swan success story

2 pm Mountain Time.

All who register will receive a link to the recording.

It would be easy to miss the 25,000-acre Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge. Hidden in southwest Wyoming, almost 40 miles north of the town of Green River, this refuge is in the middle of a sage brush sea. This high-desert refuge, created as mitigation for the construction of the Fontenelle Dam, is teeming with life. That life includes Trumpeter Swans and a unique story about how the building of a dam and a refuge led to four seasons of “desert swans”.

Presenter: Colin Dovichin, Sage Ecologist, Seedskadee NWR

Panelists: Katie Theule, Refuge Manager, Seedskadee and Cokeville Meadows National Wildlife Refuges
