We’re proud to announce the successful delivery of 50 new SCBA units and spare air bottles through a regional FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), totaling just over $500,000.

This marks the largest SCBA grant and single equipment purchase in the history of Yancey County—a major milestone for our community and the departments we serve.

This critical investment supports Double Island Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Newdale Fire & Rescue, and South Toe Fire & Rescue, replacing aging, outdated equipment with state-of-the-art respiratory protection. The upgrade significantly enhances firefighter safety while strengthening operational readiness and fire protection capabilities across all three districts.

Beyond the equipment itself, this initiative drives greater standardization across departments—streamlining mutual aid response and improving interoperability when it matters most.

This is a transformational step forward in ensuring our crews have the tools they need to operate safely and effectively in high-risk environments.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Congressman Chuck Edwards, Senator Thom Tillis, Senator Ted Budd, and Senator Ralph Hise for their continued support in securing resources that directly impact frontline emergency services.

Hazardous Weather Update 4.14.26

🔥 The combination of dry fuels, very warm temperatures, gusty winds, and reduced humidity will lead to an increased risk of wildfires again today.

🍂 Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly.

❌ A statewide burn ban issued by the N.C. Forest Service remains in place.
