Never forget.

Never forget.

We pause to mourn and remember...

On 28 January 1980, while leaving Tampa Bay after and extended yard period, U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn (WLB-391) collided with the tanker SS Capricorn. Shortly after the collision, Blackthorn capsized, killing 23 of her crew.

The cutter was later raised as part of the investigation of the collision as well as to prevent it from becoming a hazard to navigation. Blackthorn was scuttled in the Gulf of Mexico after the investigation was complete. She currently serves as an artificial reef for recreational diving and fishing.
