We are saddened to share the news that Pepper the African pied crow has passed away. Pepper lived at the NEW Zoo since March of 2008. His spunky personality, adorable antics, and incredible ability to mimic human voices (he loved to shout, "Hi, Pepper!") made him a favorite amongst zoo guests and staff members alike. At 26 years old, Pepper had far surpassed the expected lifespan of 10 to 20 years for wild pied crows. He had been monitored for age-related issues, including some arthritis, for some time, but over the weekend, Pepper's appetite decreased and he became lethargic. Despite medical attention, his condition did not improve, and so the decision was made to help him pass peacefully on Monday.
We will miss Pepper and know that so many of you will, too.
