Statement from Mayor Eric Genrich
Growing up in Green Bay, I never dreamed I would have the honor to serve my fellow citizens as your Mayor. After nearly two terms of service, it still seems surreal, and I have been truly grateful for every moment. While I am as passionate today as I have ever been about public service, and I have never been more confident in the future we share as a community, this chapter with me as your Mayor will come to an end in April. That is just a change in roles, though, as I will never stop caring about this city.
Green Bay is a truly special place that is destined for greatness. During these last seven and a half years, we have made real progress together, investing in every corner of our city and advancing an agenda to benefit all Green Bay residents and neighborhoods. By recognizing the power of partnership with local governments, nonprofits, and businesses, we have tackled problems big and small, and we have produced new, high-quality homes at a clip not seen in decades. We prioritized the safety and resiliency of our citizens and our neighborhoods, and we have increased the pace at which we repair our local infrastructure by innovating to meet the needs of our residents in fiscally responsible ways.
More than anything, I have aspired in everything we have done to lead this community with compassion for my fellow residents and love for the city that we all inhabit, making clear that all people of goodwill are welcome and celebrated here.
As I reflect back on my years of service, there are so many people to thank, but nothing of what we have achieved is possible without the trust and support of you, the voters. Thank you for blessing me with the responsibility of leading the city with you. To the employees of our City government, you are a true gift to this community. Your commitment to and love for Green Bay is palpable, and I am grateful for all your hard work and dedication to the cause of public service.
Lastly, and most personally, I am forever indebted to the friends and family who have made me who I am and who have had my back every step of the way. To my parents, I am endlessly grateful for the unconditional love and support you have given and the model that you have shown me to lead a purposeful life of service. To my sisters and their families, thanks for creating, with Mom and Dad, a calm within the storm of politics. To my kids, Henry and Amelia, you inspire me every day with your kindness, your smarts, and your senses of humor. You remind me with your mere presence that being Mayor is an immensely meaningful role, but being dad is everything.
Finally, and most importantly to Emily, I owe you what can never be expressed fully. I never would have had this honor of public service without your fierce love and support. When I first asked if we could start this particular journey, you agreed with just one condition: just win. We did, but it is only because of the strength that you have given me through all 20 years of our marriage. The love you show and live for the children of this community motivates me every day to make our corner of the world a little bit better for those who inherit it.
With all that said, we are not done. I have more than six months left until the end of my term, and I pledge to you, my fellow citizens, that I will serve you to the best of my ability until my last moment in office. As I have said many times before, we are blessed beyond belief to live in an indispensable nation, in a great state, and in an exceptional community. I remain incredibly lucky to be your Mayor.
