Great River Fire Department Great River's Bravest. Serving the community for over 100 years. The Great River Fire Department was established in 1916 on River Road in Great River.

The Mission of the Great River Fire Department is the protection of lives and property of the citizens of Great River from the adverse effects of fire, emergencies and hazardous situations on land or water. The GRFD Firefighters will serve with dedication, courage, innovation, responsiveness, courtesy, caring and professionalism while performing their duties of fire and emergency response, educati

on and prevention. We also stand ready to support and assist other Fire and Rescue Departments through mutual aid.

On February 6 at 1505 Great River FD was activated for a person thru the ice in Great South Bay off Heckscher State Park Field 6. Upon arrival Great River along with mutual aid from East Islip FD and Exchange Ambulance of the Islips and SCPD Marine located the person approximately 500 feet from shore. At this point Great River and East Islip FD began ice rescue operations they successfully retrieved the person from the ice and transferred care to Exchange Ambulance for evaluation and transport.
