The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy would like to congratulate Basic Law Enforcement Class #851 on successfully completing the academy. Director Jackie Swindler, Academy Instructors and Academy Staff appreciate your hard work and dedication.

Even though tomorrow, Friday the 13th, is considered "unlucky" by many, the graduation ceremony for over 30 "lucky" cadets will take tomorrow Friday March 13th at 10:00 a.m. at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy located at 5400 Broad River Road Columbia, South Carolina 29210. If you can't attend in person, be sure to watch the graduation live right here on FACEBOOK. the graduation will be broadcast live on the page beginning at 10:00 am.

The guest speaker for the ceremony is West Columbia Police Department Chief of Police Marion Boyce. Boyce was appointed Police Chief of West Columbia Police Department in 2021. Boyce began is law enforcement career as a Patrolman in 2006 at West Columbia PD. Chief Boyce is a champion for Community wellness and acts as a liaison for the West Columbia Outreach Programs. Chief Boyce earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Columbia College in 2017, and he holds a number of instructor certifications. Chief Boyce is a proud family man and is happily married with two beautiful daughters.

Already got a call!! the car with all the lights flashing that was at the PD said Federal Signal, NOT federal Police. They were in town doing a Demo. Nothing is going on. Stay safe Great Falls!

❄️ WINTER STORM WARNING UPDATE – GREAT FALLS, SC

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for our area. Please take the following information seriously:

• Heavy Snow: The heaviest bands are expected to hit between Noon and 5:00 PM today.
• Accumulation: Forecasters are projecting 6”–8” of total snow accumulation for Chester County.

• High Winds: Winds will pick up significantly this evening, with gusts reaching up to 25 mph, which will likely cause blowing snow and reduced visibility.

• Road Conditions: There is a high volume of traffic on the roads today. We are already receiving reports of multiple wrecks across Chester County.

🚨 TRAVEL ADVISORY: Driving is becoming extremely hazardous. For your safety and the safety of our first responders, stay home and off the roads if at all possible.

Great Falls, SC January 30, 2026

The Great Falls Police Department is issuing an updated weather advisory for our residents based on the latest forecasts for the upcoming weekend. Please review the following timeline and preparation guidelines:

Saturday, January 31: Heavy Snowfall
• Timing: Snow is expected to begin after 10:00 AM.

• Intensity: Snowfall will be heavy at times, with the highest accumulation occurring between 1:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

• Accumulation: Total snowfall is projected between 3”–7”.

• Winds: Sustained winds of 9–13 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, which may cause blowing snow and reduced visibility.

• Saturday Night: A 50% chance of additional snow remains, potentially adding another 1”–3”.

Sunday, February 1: Wind & Extreme Cold

• Conditions: While snowfall will taper off, the primary hazards will be low temperatures and wind.

• Winds: Continued breezy conditions with gusts reaching 21 mph.

• Hazard: Expect icy patches on all roadways due to Saturday’s accumulation and freezing overnight temperatures.

WEATHER UPDATE: Winter Storm Preparedness and Emergency Shelters
GREAT FALLS, SC – The Great Falls Police Department is closely monitoring the approaching winter weather system. Shelters will open at 9am Tomorrow morning, the safety of our residents is the priority , the following emergency shelters are opening tomorrow and will remain operational 24 hours a day until Monday at Noon.
Emergency Shelter Locations
• Chester Middle School: 1013 McCandless Rd, Chester, SC
• War Memorial Building: 401 Dearborn St, Great Falls, SC
Both locations will be staffed 24 hours a day by the Department of Social Services (DSS) and Law Enforcement personnel to ensure a safe and secure environment.
Shelter Amenities & Supplies
Shelters are equipped with the following essentials, though residents are encouraged to bring personal necessities if possible:
• Cots: Available in a limited quantity.
• Food: MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) and fresh fruit will be provided.
Medical & Special Needs Support
MUSC Health has established a Special Needs Shelter at the hospital for individuals with specific medical requirements that cannot be met at a general population shelter.
• Note: Restrictions apply. Please contact MUSC directly to confirm eligibility and requirements before arrival.
Pet Accommodations
Animal Control has a comprehensive plan in place to assist residents with pets. Pet trailers will be stationed at both the Chester Middle School and War Memorial Building shelters to ensure your animals are safely housed nearby.
