Governor Greg Gianforte announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) designated ten Montana counties as primary natural disaster areas due to drought.

In a letter received from USDA Undersecretary Brooke Appleton, the governor was notified that the following counties were designated, having experienced severe or extreme drought during the growing season: Beaverhead, Cascade, Chouteau, Glacier, Hill, Liberty, Madison, Pondera, Teton, and Toole.

Farmers in eligible counties have eight months from the date of a Secretarial disaster declaration to apply for emergency loans. Affected Montana farmers are encouraged to contact their local FSA office for further information.

Last week, NorthWestern Energy had a great time visiting with more than 800 fourth‑grade students from Cascade County, Mont. during the High Plains Conservation District’s Ag Days. With the help of a hands‑on model—yes, it sparked—we talked about why it’s important to stay clear of power lines and to look up when flying kites, using ladders and going about everyday activities around electricity.

Beyond electrical safety, students learned how butter and ice cream are made, where their food really comes from, and why water conservation and soil health matter.

Their curiosity and thoughtful questions made it an especially rewarding day. We had a lot of fun getting to spend time with such engaged young learners. Events like this are a great reminder of how valuable hands-on learning and strong community partnerships can be.
