Southern Berkshire Ambulance

Southern Berkshire Ambulance Southern Berkshire Ambulance is a non-profit provider of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Time lapse between call and arrival could exceed 30 minutes.

History of the Squad
Before the inception of the Ambulance Squad in 1968, Fairview Hospital was responsible for ambulance service in Southern Berkshire. In those days, there were no modular ambulances and very limited life support equipment. If an ambulance were required, the police notified the Nursing Supervisor and a maintenance man who doubled as a driver responded to the call. In addition, fe

w of those sent on calls had emergency medical training. On November 12, 1967, a bad automobile accident occurred in Egremont. Due to the dispatch system, the ambulance didn't arrive for 40 minutes. This situation cast Fairview and its ambulance service into the public spotlight. Since the fire department couldn't provide ambulance service, the organization of a separate Ambulance Squad was begun. The Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad was officially organized on
March 15, 1968 and incorporated in April of that same year. The first ambulance was donated by the American Legion Posts 127 and 298, radios were donated by the Lions Club, and Fairview provided a $10,000 grant to start construction of a garage and meeting room. In 1973, several of the 46 members had completed the 81-hour EMT Course, and
by the end of 1975, 85% of the Squad were Nationally Registered EMTs. During the late 70's, emergency equipment and training were offered to police and fire departments in our service area. In 1980, SBVAS became an Advanced Life Support Service when several EMTs gained certification as EMT-Intermediates. Throughout the 80's, skills were enhanced, equipment upgraded and services extended. Automatic External Defibrillators (AED's) were introduced during this period, and squad members became certified. In 1987, the first helicopter intercept protocols were developed. Today, there are three such services available to SBVAS, with response time no more than 20 minutes. The 90's were marked by dramatic events. With the help of community donations, the squad was expanded from a garage with just a single room attached to the larger facility that you see today. The Memorial Day Tornado in 1995, which left 3 dead and 23 injured, demonstrated the value of Mass Casualty Training. The 90's also saw SBVAS respond to 5 plane crashes. Also during this period, EMT-Basics became certified to administer epinephrine injections, a true lifesaver for patients who experience swollen airways due to severe asthma, or allergic reactions to bee stings, food, or medications. Today, SBVAS provides service to the largest geographic coverage area in
Massachusetts. Towns served include Alford, Ashley Falls, Egremont, Great Barrington, Housatonic, Monterey, Mount Washington and Sheffield. Call volume averages about 1,700 per year, and SBVAS members provide nearly 10,000 hours of volunteer service annually.

Our providers answer the call whether it is middle of the night or early in the morning, no matter the time they are there. This week we celebrate them, with gratitude, thankful words, awards and lots of home cooked foods and sweets. This team is wonderful and we appreciate them each and every day.
As EMS week moves on we want to remind all our children to be safe, wear your bike helmets and watch your surroundings as you go out in the nice weather and be safe.

Southern Berkshire Ambulance 2025: By the Numbers

Winning teams understand their numbers and use that knowledge to inform their decision-making. Here is our story of 2025 by the numbers and what we can learn from them.

Total calls: 3,040 in 2025 vs. 2,783 in 2024, up 9.23 percernt.

Our community skews about 20 years older than the state average, with a very slow growth in overall population of around 0.32 percent per year. Therefore, our growth in call volume of 9.23 percent was approximately 28 times that of the growth in population. As our average age continues to rise, we are seeing more demand for our services. At some point, this may require us to consider adding another crew to each shift, which would significantly increase the assessments charged to our partner towns.

Breakdown of calls — Of the 3,040 calls:

1,662 were 911 calls where we were primary response, up from 1,630 in 2024.
69 were paramedic intercept calls to support local providers, up from 66 in 2024.
862 were inter-facility transfers (IFTs), mostly between Fairview and other hospitals.
We prioritize primary and intercept over IFTs, since IFTs are typically time sensitive but non-emergency.

Second thoughts — Of the 3,040 calls:

357 refused service at the scene, up from 296 in 2024.
90 canceled on route, up from 75 in 2024.
We track this because insurance only pays if we actually transport a patient. Nearly 15 percent of our calls resulted in no revenue to the organization.

Completed transfers — Of the remaining 2,593 calls:

1,287 were Basic Level Service (EMTs staff these calls).
1,306 were Advanced Level Service (at least one paramedic must be present in the ambulance).
Most town ambulances are staffed with EMTs. Our paramedic capabilities are one of the most important ways this organization adds value throughout Southern Berkshire County.

We have 33 employees:

Every employee except our CFO is either an EMT or a paramedic.

This includes our administrative staff.

Cindi, our office manager, is an EMT.

Kevin, our chief operating officer, is a paramedic.

If we are short-staffed on a shift, our administrative staff can drop what they are doing and make sure we have the professionals on hand to complete incoming calls. This backup allows us to provide the added coverage the community needs.
