Today was brought to you by the hard work of labor unions who used collective bargaining to demand the basic freedoms we enjoy today such as overtime, holidays, and the weekend.

I recently met with Ben Huizenga, a volunteer from Stop Predatory Gambling Illinois. Gambling addiction has one of the highest su***de rates of any addictive disorder — an estimated 1 in 5 people with severe problem gambling attempt su***de.

We discussed HB4149, which would ban the use of credit to purchase lottery tickets. The lottery is Illinois' most common form of gambling, and while credit cards are already banned for other gambling in the state, that gap still exists for the lottery.

I am grateful to hear from advocates like Ben who help bring awareness to addiction.

"We need a plan to ensure that the good outweighs the bad." - Bill Gates

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds extraordinary promise - from curing disease to accelerating scientific breakthroughs - but we cannot ignore the urgent, profound and potentially catastrophic risks posed by increasingly powerful systems. Without adequate and reliable safeguards, advanced AI could enable devastating cyberattacks, accelerate dangerous biological threats or behave in unpredictable and uncontrollable ways with far-reaching consequences for our economy, national security and public safety.

I joined legislative leaders from Illinois, New York and California in calling on frontier AI developers to work together to establish a Mutually Agreed Pacing Framework. The companies building the world’s most advanced AI systems have a responsibility to ensure that safety, transparency and accountability keep pace with innovation.

The breathtaking speed and scale of AI development make this an urgent challenge we need to focus on NOW. We cannot afford complacency, nor for a devastating crisis to occur before putting meaningful and effective safeguards in place. The decisions being made today about systems of unprecedented power could fundamentally shape our society - and the lives of generations to come.

We have a responsibility to act with urgency. The stakes are simply too high to get this wrong. Humanity is depending on us to get it right.

It was great to meet with Dan Vosnos, a Glenview father and passionate advocate whose son Ellis has Down syndrome. Dan brought firsthand insight into the gaps that still exist in protecting students with disabilities in our schools. We talked through ways to strengthen oversight of the adults entrusted with their care, so every family can feel confident their child is safe. I am grateful to meet with advocates like Dan who turn lived experience into action. This is exactly the kind of input that shapes better policy.

The summer has been a busy time for our office to connect with community resources in Lake County. We have visited the new PADS Lake County Pathways Family Shelter, Lake County Health Department Belvidere office, and reopening of the Warren Newport Library.

šŸ”PADS Lake County celebrated the opening of their Pathways Family Shelter in Waukegan. This fixed-site shelter brings safe housing, healthcare, and supportive services together under one roof, creating a place where families can find stability, support, and a path home.

ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹The Health Department’s Belvidere Medical Building offers Primary Care for General Medicine, Family Medicine & Pediatrics. All Lake County residents are eligible for care and no one is denied services due to inability to pay. This property is within walking distance of other essential LCHD facilities, including the TB clinic and Mental Health Group Home — creating a true hub of accessible care for residents.

šŸ“šThe Warren Newport Library underwent a major transformation this past year. Coco’s Cove is now a museum-quality space for toddlers through elementary age to play in the library. There is a dedicated Middle School Zone and new workpods around the library. I was proud to secure $250,000 in state grant funding to contribute to the facility renovations and to see this project come to life.

ā€œWhen severe weather damages homes, businesses and property, recovery can be overwhelming for the people affected,ā€ said Edly-Allen. ā€œOur communities deserve support as they work to get back on their feet, and this disaster assistance can provide meaningful relief during that process. I’m grateful that resources are available to help our neighbors recover from this summer’s storms.ā€
