I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine after all that rain! Don’t forget this Friday September 8th, 2023 from 10 am-12 pm is Quarterly Wildfire Stakeholder Meeting in Grass Valley! The meeting will focus on Past Events: Lessons Learned and Future Outcomes. We will be focusing on the 2020 Jones Fire from the perspective of wildfire response, ecological impact/recovery, and community recovery. Our speakers will discuss the lesson learned from this fire and how we are moving forward. This will tie into our group activity around wildfire resiliency and answer the question “Is Nevada County Wildfire Resilient”? Join us to learn how past events can guide future actions and the what is truly means to be a wildfire resilient community. Good morning all,

UC Cooperative Extension is giving a talk on defensible space through Sierra Streams Institute's monthly event called Sci Pub, where informal talks are given on science-y and community interest subjects. It's a lot of fun! (If you'd like to get on the listserv, let me know, it is once a month on Tuesdays).

It is also free to attend (but you pay for drinks) on August 22nd from 6-7 pm at Gold Vibe Kombuchary in Grass Valley (12615 Charles Dr, Grass Valley, CA 95945).

A follow-up radio training was held on Wednesday, Nov 2. The following was discussed:

- programming radios that got missed;

- demonstrating how to tune to KVMR;

- demonstrating how to make the screen stay lit longer and how to adjust the screen brightness to increase visibility;

- reviewing some of the things about the radio that people in radio watch groups have found confusing; and

- questions were answered.

The second training for the Fire Watch Radio group, a subsidiary of our Firewise Committee, was held today. We learned about our two-way radios and had practice scenarios for the proper communication in emergencies. We will continue to practice for a few more weeks to assure we are all on-board. Roles were assigned as follows: Lorraine Walter is the Meeting Manager, with Debbie Lindh as backup, Ed Tulley and Zac Witte are our Information Monitors, Byron Stevenson is the backup. The meeting/training was well attended and was very informative.

We held our first community meeting. There was a wealth of information shared:
1. Why we want to become a Firewise community.
2. What we have done so far and what remains to be done.
3. What the fire risks are in our neighborhood.
4. The radio communication program that is being launched for our area.
5. Concerns regarding being surrounded by Empire Park property.
6. The need for those who have not submitted their survey's to please do so, with the assurance that all information on surveys is confidential.

Ember attack! Fire season is not over! The forests are dry, weather warm, and people are starting fires.

According to research, it’s an ember attack that’s going to take down your house, 80-90% of the time, rather than the actual fire front reaching your door. Good Day Neighbors!

We had a great first “Gold Hill Radio Watch" meeting Sunday Sept. 25th.

We participated in a thorough presentation, plenty of questions were addressed, and in the end all those in attendance were on board and ready to get the equipment and get rolling.

It was made clear that these neighborhood radio groups have an upper size limit. Too many voices becomes difficult to manage when the group gets large. Once we reach 20 households, it is recommendrd to start another group. If we get to that point, hopefully it won’t be too much of a problem and we’ll have someone willing to orchestrate a new group. We are at 14 interested households now. Bottom line: best to jump in now if you are interested.

TECH LEAD NEEDED

One the “jobs" that we’ll need: 1-2 people to help on an ongoing basis is "tech lead" - someone who understands electronic gear, can troubleshoot problems with radios, and who will learn how to program the radios. The demand for these skills will be fairly rare, but tech needs will come up. If you think you are a good match for this, please be ready to learn the radio programming at the next meeting. The next meeting is planned for the end of October and will be announced.
