We had a great time visiting Ms. Bahlaus's elementary class last week! Our team enjoyed teaching basic first aid and were very impressed by how well the students grasped the concepts and connected it to their outdoor survival unit. Thank you Ms. Bahlaus's Science class for the wonderful time and kind letters.

Controlled burns like the one done by the Grass Lake Fire Department are incredibly important for both firefighter training and community safety.

They give crews a rare chance to practice in a realistic but managed environment, which helps them:
• Understand how fire behaves in natural settings (wind shifts, fuel types, terrain)
• Practice coordination and communication under live conditions
• Test equipment and techniques safely
• Improve response strategies for wildfires and brush fires

Beyond training, controlled burns also benefit the ecosystem around places like Grass Lake Nature Center Trail by:
• Reducing excess dry vegetation (which lowers wildfire risk)
• Promoting healthy plant regrowth
• Supporting native species that depend on periodic fire

So while it might look intense, it’s actually a carefully planned operation that protects both firefighters and the community in the long run.

****PRESCRIBED BURN****

On Sunday 4/12/2026, weather dependent, the Grass Lake Township Fire Department will be performing a prescribed wildland burn. This will be taking place at the Nature Trail located by the Grass Lake High School. With that, you may see a large amount of smoke in the area as well as several emergency vehicles being used to manage the fire. Prescribed burns like this are essential for wildland management as well as the health of the overall ecosystem. Burns like these are also great training opportunities for our Firefighters so they can improve their skills and increase our ability to limit property damage during a live wildland emergency. Please avoid the area or maintain a safe distance while this activity is taking place. Thank you.

On Saturday, Michigan Rescue Concepts conducted an 8-hour Ice Water Rescue course hosted by the Henrietta Fire Department. In attendance were members from the Grass Lake Township Fire Department, Napoleon Fire Department, and Rives Junction Fire Department.

The course included both classroom instruction and hands-on practical training. After completing the classroom portion, personnel moved to a designated lake to apply their skills in real-world scenarios. Firefighters trained in self-rescue techniques, victim rescue using various equipment and methods, and proper shoreline support operations to ensure safe and effective rescues.

All training was conducted in a controlled environment, with the safety of all personnel remaining the top priority.

By the end of the day, participants earned Ice Water Rescue I certification, and several members achieved Ice Water Rescue II (Technician Level).

As of Saturday, the majority of Grass Lake Township Fire personnel are now certified at the Ice Water Rescue I level, with several certified at the Ice Water Rescue II Technician level.

We continue to train and prepare so we can better serve and protect our community—no matter the conditions.
