Welcome to the Granville Fire Department web site. Approximately twenty-four volunteer members provide 24/7 coverage to approx. 1,600 permanent residents.

The GFD is a municipal volunteer fire department responsible for the safe and efficient ex*****on of life, property, and environmental preservation through fire suppression, specialized rescue, BLS Ambulance service, and code compliance enforcement to the citizens and visitors of Granville Massachusetts. Two stations located on state route 57 cover the 43 square miles of town. In addition to local

emergency response, mutual aid assistance is provided to all surrounding communities. The Fire Department also administers the issuance of smoke/CO detector certificates, petroleum tank installation permits, underground oil tank removal permits, open burning permits, and oil heating appliance permits.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11, we pause to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the brave first responders who answered the call without hesitation.

For firefighters, 9/11 is more than a moment in history. It is a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and commitment that define the fire service. We honor the 343 FDNY firefighters and all those who gave their lives in service to others that day.

As our nation continues to celebrate America 250, we are reminded that the story of the United States is one of resilience. For 250 years, Americans have faced challenges, endured hardship, and emerged stronger through unity, service, and dedication to one another. The strength shown on September 11, 2001, and in the days, months, and years that followed, remains a powerful example of the American spirit.

Please join the members of the Granville Fire Department in the remembrance of those we lost, honor those who served, and reflect on the values that continue to make our communities and our country strong.

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the Granville Fire Department share the passing of Dorothy "Dottie Lou" Bettinger.

Dottie dedicated more than two decades of service to the Town of Granville as a volunteer EMT from 1986 through 2012. She also faithfully served as a member and president of the Granville Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary from 1972 though 2010, always willing to lend a helping hand and support the department and community she cared so deeply about. Her lifelong commitment to caring for others was evident in everything she did.

Dottie touched countless lives through her kindness, compassion, and unwavering dedication to service. Whether responding to the needs of residents, supporting department activities, bringing family and friends together, or her wonderful stories or conversation every time you would run into her; she made a lasting impact on all who knew her.

On behalf of the Granville Fire Department, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Dottie's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 3, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Southwick Forastiere Funeral & Cremation, 624 College Highway, Southwick. Funeral services will take place on Friday, September 4, at 11:00 AM at the Granville Federated Church, United Church of Christ, 16 Granby Road, Granville, with burial to follow at Silver Street Cemetery.

STRUCTURE FIRE - Incident Report

Shortly after 3am this morning, Granville Fire was toned out to a box alarm at 16 Blandford Road for a "reported fully engulfed structure fire". Granville Fire and EMS units responded promptly with an engine crew and tanker. Blandford Road and the affected property were just across the street from the fire house where an ominous orange glow could be seen from the road way.

Engine 1 (E1) arrived at the address and laid in approx 1000ft of supply line up the driveway due to its extended distance from the road way. E1 and it's crew made their way up to the affected residence where they confirmed a working structure fire and flames approx 10ft in the air above the roof line. Granville command was able to validate all pets and people made it safe out of the residence. A good portion was already enveloped by the flames and it was spreading fast into the garage and additional parts of the living quarters.

E1 and it's crew moved swiftly to deploy a handline to the delta side of the structure to begin knock down operations. A second handline was deployed to begin attacking the flames now rolling out of the garage door eves. The fire was spreading at a tremendous rate where the entire garage became over taken, command and E1 operator decided to deploy the deck gun. As mutual aid partners began arriving with man power, additional lines were placed to attack different sides of the structure. This was a very fast moving fire and posed many challenges for crews to overcome and they battled the flames for nearly an hour before the majority was knocked down. Making use of Southwick's Ladder Ariel for overhead visibility and attack.

During attack operations , a direct fill relay was established from the Blandford Road pond dry hydrant through a relay pumper and additional tankers at the driveway entrance then up to the scene where an approx total length of 2000ft of supply line was used.

Around 6 am, all visible fire was extinguished and targeted hot spot operations continued. Mutual aid crews were released as needed but Granville crews remained on scene throughout the majority of the day to handle additional hotspots, personal item retrieval, and assistance with the State Fire Marshall. At this time, the cause is still under investigation.

All responding crews did a tremendous job. We would like to thank our mutual aid partners Tolland MA Volunteer Fire Department , Southwick Fire Department , Lost Acres Fire Department, and The East Hartland Volunteer Fire Department for their continued support and efforts.

Last night, for our weekly drill, we wanted to put our rural water supply skills to the test on a larger scale. With 8 departments, over 50 fire personnel, 5 engines, and 8 tankers involved, it was quite the operation.

We set up a 3 drop-tank system utilizing a Holley-Tube and jet siphon to transfer water from one tank to another, while engines relay pumped water to the spray zone using 2 handlines and a deck gun.

We have run this type of drill before and have experienced plenty of challenges, particularly at the fill sites. This time, however, everything came together exactly as planned. Both engines at the fill sites utilized multiple 2.5-inch and 4-inch lines and were able to fill each tanker in under 3 minutes.

After the final briefing and crunching the numbers, the operation moved approximately 53,000 gallons of water in just 50 minutes, averaging roughly 1,000 gallons per minute.

More importantly, this drill gave everyone involved an opportunity to practice communication, tanker operations, relay pumping, water movement, and coordination between multiple departments in a realistic rural water supply operation. Drills like this are a great reminder of how important it is to train together before we need these skills on an actual incident.

This drill could not have happened without the coordination, preparation, and hard work of everyone involved. Every department brought personnel who worked together throughout the night to make this a fun, effective, and educational drill.

TRAFFIC NOTICE - Main Road

Tomorrow, Tuesday Aug 25th, from ~6pm to 10pm, Granville Fire along with multiple surrounding towns will be conducting a tanker shuttle drill.

Tanker apparatus will be traveling between our fill sites on Blandford Road and Bruce Road (via Old Westfield Road) to the Granville Village School on Main Road.

Please be aware and cautious of the increased traffic and presence of personnel or equipment. Apparatus will be operating with lights on where necessary for visibility and safety.

We are hoping for a great drill to practice with our extended mutual aid partners and to improve our rural water supply skills. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation and understanding.

Training is held every Tuesday from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, with opportunities to attend the Massachusetts or Connecticut Fire Academy.

Our Bruins Jersey Raffle has finally concluded and we are very appreciative of everyone who purchased tickets in support of the Granville MA Fire Department , the Granville MA Police Department, and the Granville Police Association.

With the funds raised, we will be able to purchase modern exercise equipment at the station for members to help stay in shape.
