ed after South Carolina Politician John C. Calhoun. Calhoun County is located in west central region of West Virginia. It's county seat is Grantsville. As of the 2010 census, the population of Calhoun County was 7,627. Calhoun County consists of 281 total square miles, which includes 279 square miles of land, and 1.4 square miles of water. Major highways in Calhoun County consists of US Rt. 33/119, Rt. 16, and Rt. 5.

My office has recently become aware of a scam circulating in which an unknown individual posing as “Deputy Stephens from the Sheriff’s Office” has called people and demanded bond payments in the amount of several thousand dollars in order to avoid being arrested. This is a fraudulent scheme and does not originate from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office or our deputies. The Sheriff’s Office never makes phone calls related to bond payments and is not responsible for accepting payments related to bonds or court costs. Please see the following for some tips to avoid being scammed:

—Verify the identity of the caller—no one from the Sheriff’s Office will call and demand payments from you in order to avoid arrest or secure release from jail. If the caller has a foreign accent and makes threats in order to acquire your payment, this is also a clue that is it not a call from us!
—Check the phone number—the phone numbers for the courthouse are public and can be found online. If the phone number looks suspicious, hang up immediately and call the appropriate courthouse office to verify the origin of the phone call.
—NEVER give your personal information out to an unknown caller. The Sheriff’s Office will never ask for your social security number or bank account information, and we will only ask for your credit card information if you call us directly to make a tax payment.
—Remember, if you have not been arrested, you will not have a bond to pay! If a call seems suspicious, hang up. If you believe someone has tried to scam you by claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office, you can always call our direct line at 304-354-6333 to verify whether we have called you.

My deputies are outraged that someone is using their name to scam the people of our county, and we all hope that you are able to use this information to keep the scammers from taking advantage of you. Stay vigilant and trust your instincts if something feels fraudulent.

With severe weather on the horizon, please take a moment to review this message from our humane officer:
This time of the year, our office receives more animal complaints than at any other time. This is a reminder that WV law requires that you provide your animals with basic necessities, including food, water, medical care, and adequate shelter to protect from the elements of weather. This means that if your pet is to remain outside in inclement weather, you must provide an insulated shelter to shield against the high winds, precipitation, and severe temperatures. If you are not able provide adequate outside shelter, bring your dog inside. Otherwise, you may receive a visit from one of your friendly neighborhood police officers. This could result in warnings, a fine, or in serious cases, criminal charges and the removal of your pet. Please also take care to regularly check your outside pet’s water source and replenish/de-ice as necessary. Heated water buckets work wonders in cold weather.
In addition, to those who take time to report their concerns about outdoor animals, keep in mind that thick-coated dogs such as huskies and malamutes are built for the cold weather and as long as they have a shelter, are likely very happy to stay out in the snow. Please exercise patience during this season, as I am a full time law enforcement officer and have to respond to priority calls first. Stay safe, stay warm, and take care of yourselves and your pets.

Earlier today, there was a concern about the main doors of the courthouse being unlocked. Meetings had been previously scheduled before the holidays. As these meetings are open to the public, the front door was indeed unlocked during our presence.

NEW YEAR’S EVE SAFETY MESSAGE

As we prepare to welcome a brand-new year, I want to take a moment to wish each of you a joyful and memorable New Year’s Eve. This is a time to gather with family and friends, reflect on the year behind us, and look ahead with hope and optimism.

As you celebrate, please make safety a priority. A few simple choices can make all the difference:
• Plan ahead if you’ll be out celebrating. Arrange a sober ride or designate a driver.
• Use fireworks responsibly. Follow local laws, keep a safe distance, and never allow children to handle fireworks without supervision.
• Look out for one another. If you see someone who may need help, step in or call for assistance.
• Stay aware of your surroundings, whether you’re attending an event, a gathering, or simply enjoying the evening.

Our deputies will be on duty throughout the night to help ensure everyone’s safety.

Recently, the Calhoun County Commission acquired a UTV for use by the Sheriff's Office, which will serve as a valuable asset for traversing areas inaccessible to regular patrol vehicles. When compared to pickup trucks and larger SUVs, the UTV's cost-effectiveness made it an evident choice. The necessity for 4x4 capabilities is pronounced given some of Calhoun County's rugged terrain. Various agencies and fire departments incorporate UTVs into their fleets due to their versatility. We are thankful the county commission provided us with this UTV.
