• Living With Alzheimer’s Disease, Education and Support for Families, Caregivers and Friends of Persons with Alzheimer’s or Related Dementias. Understand Challenging Behaviors: What the Person You Are Caring For May Be Feeling. Alzheimer’s is a real disease and the person with Alzheimer’s is not willfully misbehaving, but in many cases expressing a need for care, comfort, independence, control or even pain relief. The quality of care can improve when the caregiver sees the challenging behavior from the perspective of the person with dementia, develops several skills and techniques to respond to the difficult behavior, and learns to recognize events and situations that may trigger behaviors. The caregiver can learn to recognize the person’s need to feel in control, connected and to communicate a need. Explore techniques to help the person move from feelings of confusion, agitation, anger, fear and paranoia to feelings of trust, calm, security and confidence. This workshop is designed for caregivers and staff at long term care facilities, adult foster care providers, in-home care providers and family caregivers. Wednesday, August 28, 2:00pm to 3:30pm, Rogue Valley Retirement, 1001 N.E. A Street, Grants Pass. Registration fee: $15.00 per person. Space is limited. Please call 541-956-4472 to reserve your place. The monthly Living With Alzheimer’s Disease Caregiver Workshops are presented by the Alzheimer’s Consortium of Southern Oregon, and UCAN/RSVP

• RSVP UCAN is recruiting energy education volunteers to help teach in our community. UCAN provides cost-free weatherization services to income-qualified residents (homeowners AND renters) of Douglas and Josephine Counties. The goal of the weatherization program is to provide services that help families lower their utility bills and stay warmer, safer and more comfortable. The Weatherization Program reduces energy costs for low-income households by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes, while ensuring their health and safety. Typically, low income households spend 14% of their annual income on energy, compared with 3.5% for other households. Energy reduction may be accomplished by providing home repairs such as increased insulation, repair of broken windows, repair of heating systems and air sealing throughout the home. If you enjoy talking to people, public speaking and helping others save money, this is for you. Volunteer training is already scheduled for September 6. All volunteers will be trained and certified to facilitate these educational workshops. Focusing on conserving energy in homes, thus reducing energy bills and leaving households with more money in their pockets. They will discuss and discover ways to reduce home energy consumption by focusing on heating and cooling systems, hot water, lighting and appliances. For those who participate in energy education workshops we also offer a free energy kit with many items that will immediately help save money. . For more information, call Joy Kilishek, 541-956-4474.

Food & Friends serves more than meals...In many cases volunteers are the only people our seniors see on any given day. They serve more than a meal; they provide vital social contact and a safety net. Volunteers are always needed to deliver Meals on Wheels and help prepare meals. While volunteering forFood & Friends provides a vital service to our community, it is also FUN! Feel the satisfaction that comes from helping others in need of nourishment and a friendly face. Come together to give back to your community. Organizations can form a dedicated volunteer team of co-workers to help near your workplace. This is a great opportunity for businesses, service groups, and other agencies. We need caring people who will deliver meals to homebound seniors, drivers use their own vehicles (mileage reimbursement is availableand donations are tax deductible). Meals are picked up at a central location. Training is provided. Volunteers complete a criminal background check. Our volunteer drivers deliver about 15,000 meals each month to individuals living independently at home, who, for health reasons, cannot make their own meals. An additional 4,000 meals are served each month at our 12 congregate senior dining sites with the help of our volunteers. Last fiscal year volunteers served a total of 238,384 meals to approximately 3,900 people in Jackson and Josephine Counties. Volunteers are needed immediately Grants Pass and the Illinois Valley folks; substitute drivers and meals site opportunities. For more information, 541-659-9338.
