Today, I was honored to be part of the Granite City Labor Day Parade, after being endorsed by the Local AFL-CIO. And one of my biggest supporters was right in the front!
Organized Labor is responsible for so many of the things we take for granted in this country. These people fought and fought, with sometimes broken bodies but always unbroken wills, for things like fair pay, worker safety, and even something as simple as weekends. They put their livelihoods on the line in order to prevent their fellow workers from being taken advantage of by people who already had all the advantages. And today is a day we honor that Labor.
And I make you this promise. When I am on the Madison County Board, if a company wants to come in to this county, and is asking for tax incentives of any kind in order to do business, they will have to agree to use Union Labor to build, or I WILL NOT VOTE YES. It is as simple as that. You do not get to take advantage of tax dollars paid in by our workers, without paying those workers fair wages in return. There's also another reason why.
If you want something done, you want it done right the first time. And that means you want it done by Union Labor.
