πŸ“‹ UPDATE: South Placer Fire District Board Votes to Place Funding Measure on November Ballot

The SPFD Board of Directors has voted to bring the Fire and Emergency Medical Response Measure to voters in Loomis and Granite Bay this November.

Here's what you need to know:

πŸ“ Why it's on the ballot: The District has faced funding challenges for decades, resulting in two closed fire stations in Granite Bay, difficulty retaining emergency medical responders, and deferred equipment maintenance.

πŸ’° What it would do: Repeal the existing parcel taxes in Loomis and Granite Bay, replace them with a single uniform $375/year parcel tax on single-family parcels, and generate an additional $2.5M annually.

πŸš’ What the funds would support:
β€’ Reopening closed fire stations
β€’ Attracting & retaining experienced EMTs and paramedics
β€’ Equipment maintenance and replacement
β€’ Firefighter training
β€’ Equitable, uniform tax rates across the District

Did you know our fire engines can use suction hose(like a straw) and pull water from a stagnant source?

You can see here that we’re pulling water from and using our fire engines to flow the water through a ground monitor that is flowing 1000 gallons per minute!

Got a pond or swimming pool? In certain circumstances we can use them as a water supply!

Thank you to for donating a portion of a new roof to Granite Bay Fire Station #17 and to our Master Gardener volunteers who also helped keep our station grounds beautiful. These are just two examples of the incredible neighbors who show up for SPFD.

Several companies and organizations volunteer their time and skills to support our district, due to our funding challenges and we are so grateful for every one of them.

These funding challenges hinder our ability to invest in and maintain our fire stations. We aggressively pursue grants to help bridge the gap, but the goodwill of our community β€” neighbors, businesses, and volunteers stepping in β€” makes an enormous difference. Without a new permanent funding source, our ability to maintain our stations to provide emergency response is in jeopardy.

To everyone who has volunteered with us: thank you. πŸš’β€οΈ

Firefighting AND storytime? Best. Day. Ever. πŸš’πŸ“–

Our crew stopped by the Granite Bay Public Library this morning for Firefighter Storytime and had the BEST time!

These little ones and their families are the reason we do what we do. Thank you for having us! 🧑

πŸš’ You may have spotted our crew cruising around in our soon-to-be delivered new fire engine, and yes, we're just as excited as you are! But we wanted to share why this moment matters so much to our community.

Approved in June 2025, this engine cost $1,023,973, $900,000 sof that was saved over five years through mitigation funds, with the remainder from apparatus replacement savings. We will officially take ownership in 2026.

We chose a stock vehicle rather than a custom build, which kept costs down and avoided the nearly 4-year lead time custom engines now require. Finding a stock engine that matched our existing fleet still took close to a year.

The cost of fire engines has skyrocketed πŸ“ˆ
2021 average: $680,000
Today's average: $1.5 million

That's more than double in five years. Outside of this new engine, our fleet averages 10 years old - aging equipment means outdated technology, and our community deserves better.

We respond to thousands of emergency medical calls every year and two stations have had to close in recent years. Advance purchasing decisions like this one are how we work to stay ahead.

Without a new, steady funding source, future equipment investments will mean cuts elsewhere. This isn't mismanagement, it's the result of a funding model unchanged since 1981 and soaring equipment costs.

πŸ”₯ FIREWORKS ARE BANNED IN UNINCORPORATED PLACER COUNTYπŸ”₯

This includes ALL fireworks, even "safe and sane" varieties.

As we head into summer, South Placer Fire District wants our community to know: no fireworks of any kind are permitted in the unincorporated areas of Placer County.

Help us protect our neighborhoods and open spaces by spreading the word.

πŸš‘ Did you know over 90% of our calls are medical emergencies?

Every day, our EMS crews show up fast and ready because in those moments, every second counts. This week, we celebrate our dedicated firefighters who save lives before the hospital doors ever open. ❀️

β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή The best first responder is sometimes the person already in the room. Through our Stop the Bleed and hands-only CPR programs, we're putting life-saving skills into the hands of students, families, and everyday community members. From school visits to station tours, our crews are proud to help prepare the next generation to step up when it matters most. 🏫

We’ve taken meaningful steps to operate efficiently while maintaining the best possible service:
β€’ Secured grants
β€’ Improved billing practices
β€’ Optimized administrative positions and reduced overhead costs
β€’ Cross-trained personnel to retain and recruit the best firefighters, medics and support staff
We continue to pursue grants and cut costs, but these efforts alone cannot sustain emergency services at the level our community deserves.
