Winterizing your Boat

Unfortunately it's getting closer to haul out time for boating on the Great Lakes. How will you handle prepping your boat for the winter months. Here are some of the many things you may want to consider.

Engine - one of the most important tasks preparing your engine and fuel system to avoid damage.Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for winterization, which may include draining the engine coolant, changing the oil and filter, and adding a fuel stabilizer.

Electrical Systems - inspect all of the electrical connections, wires, and components for signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Replace any worn-out or damaged parts and clean any corrosion using a wire brush or specialized electrical cleaner.

Batteries - inspect the battery for any signs of damage, leaks, or corrosion. Clean any corrosion using a mixture of baking soda and water. Test the battery’s voltage using a multimeter to ensure it is holding a charge. If your battery is older or not holding a charge as it should, it may be time for a replacement. If possible, remove batteries and secure them in a warm, dry place. Remember to remove small batteries from emergency lights, clocks, radios, etc so that they do not salt up.

Water Systems - drain all water tanks, including freshwater, wastewater, and livewell systems. Use compressed air to blow out any remaining water from the pipes and faucets. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions when winterizing specific components, such as the engine’s cooling system or water heater. Antifreeze may need to be added to these systems to protect against freezing temperatures.

Remove Electronics and Valuables - remove any electronics and valuables to protect them from theft. Many electronic devices are susceptible to moisture and extreme temperatures. For my boat, I remove and hang all my sailbags, inflatables and dock lines inside the cabin or in the garage to prevent any tempting treats for potential four legged varmints.

Documents - remove any paper documents that you might need for next years registration or you don't want to get damaged. Keep a list of the equipment you may have removed so that you have a checklist to prepare your boat for next years season.

Today we celebrated a Change of Command for USCG Station Fairport and the retirement for BMCS Timothy Zorichak. Captain Matthew Walter, who serves as Commander, Sector Eastern Great Lakes, presided over the ceremonies. In this role, BMCS Zorachak retired after 23 years of service to the USCG, the last few years as the OIC for the Station. The new OIC for Station Fairport is BMCS Orlando Rivera. Bravo Zulu Senior Chief to you and your family. It's been great to work with you. Fair winds and following seas as you chart your way through retirement.

VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS

Have you scheduled a vessel safety check for your boat yet? Many boats are still just going in the water and its a great time to reach out and schedule a complimentary vessel safety check. Boating season is just about here and it’s a great time to contact the Auxiliary to schedule a Vessel Safety Check (VSC). A VSC is performed at your boat and can be done in your driveway to your local marina or yacht club. A vessel safety check usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending upon the size of your boat. Remember that paddlecraft are also considered recreational vessels and a VSC can be performed on them as well.

Vessels passing safety checks are awarded a U.S. Coast Guard / Auxiliary Decal that informs the Coast Guard, local Sheriff’s and Police that your boat was in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws during a safety check for that year.
