Fifth-graders at Aberdeen Academy are continuing their effort to have the stonefly recognized as Michigan’s official state insect. State Rep. Stephen Wooden has introduced House Bill 4519, which would officially designate the stonefly as the state insect.

“It’s inspiring to see our children take such an interest in the health of our waterways," Rep. Wooden said.

Two educators from Grand Rapids Public Schools have been recognized by the Groundswell Stewardship Initiative for their leadership in environmental stewardship and outdoor learning.

Brooke Bevins, a ninth-grade biology teacher at GR Ottawa Hills High School, received the 2026 Sprout Teacher of the Year Award.

Joe Uzarski of Grand Rapids Montessori received the inaugural 2026 Rooted in Service Award.

Meet Christian “CJ” McBride, a senior at Grand Rapids Learning Center. While attending the only high school in West Michigan on a college campus, he has already completed 36 college credits.

He plans to attend Georgia State University to study biomedical sciences.

For 18 years, Congress Elementary fifth-grade teacher Charity Webbley has dedicated herself to helping scholars grow academically, socially and emotionally while building a classroom culture rooted in love, respect and perseverance.
