National Estate Planning Awareness Week 2025: A Call to Action for Families
This year, during National Estate Planning Awareness Week (October 19 – 25, 2025), the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF) encourages individuals and families to take meaningful steps toward securing their financial future and supporting the causes they care about. Estate planning isn’t just for the wealthy—it is a wise and responsible move for anyone who wants to make sure their wishes are honored and their legacy endures.
According to the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils, more than half of Americans lack even a basic will. This oversight can leave families vulnerable to unnecessary conflict, confusion, and significant legal costs when a loved one passes away. National Estate Planning Awareness Week, established by Congress in 2008, aims to bridge this knowledge gap.
A comprehensive estate plan is much more than just a will—it is a collection of legal documents designed to protect your family, ensure your wishes are honored, and manage your affairs if you become incapacitated or pass away. A well-prepared plan typically includes several key components:
Your Last Will and Testament outlines who will receive your assets and names the individuals you wish to administer your estate, carry out your final wishes, and, if necessary, serve as guardians for any minor children. A Living Trust can allow your assets to bypass the often lengthy and expensive probate process while protecting vulnerable beneficiaries and helping to minimize tax consequences. Powers of Attorney—both financial and medical—designate trusted individuals to make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. An Advance Healthcare Directive, or Living Will, communicates your preferences for end-of-life medical treatment. Beneficiary Designations specify who will receive funds from retirement accounts and life insurance policies, ensuring your assets are distributed as intended. Finally, a Digital Assets Plan addresses your online presence—such as social media, email, and digital wallets—so these accounts are managed according to your wishes.
For more than 30 years, the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation has been striving to build a stronger community by mobilizing generosity are the needs of the Greater Itasca Area. We invite you to join us in this meaningful work and to include the Foundation in your conversations with your financial or estate planner. 100+ Women Event Unites Itasca Area to Support Local Non-Profit
The power of collective giving was on full display once again as 170 women gathered on October 13 at the Timberlake Lodge in Grand Rapids for the second Giving Event of 100+ Women Who Care – Itasca Area. The growing philanthropic movement continues to make a meaningful impact by uniting local women to raise funds for nonprofits serving the Itasca community.
Each attendee contributed $100 or more and voted to support one of three nominated organizations: KAXE Northern Community Radio, North Country Trail Association, and the Itasca Area Cancer Crisis Fund. Representatives from each nonprofit had three minutes to share their mission and community impact.
Kathy Pliska, who nominated and spoke on behalf of KAXE/KBXE, delivered the winning presentation. The station received $17,425 in donations from attendees. In a touching gesture, an anonymous donor matched the event’s funds—directing the matching amount to the Itasca Area Cancer Crisis Fund, which received the second-highest number of votes.
Before the nominations began, Colleen Chapin, Executive Director of Advocates for Family Peace—the recipient of the first 100+ Women Who Care event in May—shared how their $17,100 donation had been put to work. The funds provided transportation, housing assistance, down payments, telephones, and other critical resources to help women safely transition away from abusive situations.
Event organizers say the continued success of 100+ Women Who Care – Itasca Area shows the power of community collaboration. “Every time we gather, the energy in the room is electric,” said Lisa Randall of the 100+ Women Who Care – Itasca Area Committee. “It’s incredible to see women from across the area come together, give generously, and make a tangible, immediate difference right here at home.”
The next 100+ Women Who Care – Itasca Area event will take place on May 4, 2026, at the Timberlake Lodge. All women are welcome to participate.

Generous Donation Provides Relief for Families Facing Cancer

The Itasca Area Cancer Crisis Fund (IACCF), held at the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, is honored to announce a generous $1,500 donation from Jon Rohloff and State Farm Insurance in support of families and individuals battling cancer in Itasca County area.

This gift will directly benefit local residents through crisis grants that help cover travel and lodging expenses, fuel, and other incidental costs incurred during cancer treatments. The fund was established in 2010 and has been providing critical relief to families during some of their most difficult times.

“We are so grateful for this donation and the difference it will make for our neighbors who are facing cancer,” said Sarah Anderson, IACCF board member. “The Itasca Area Cancer Crisis Fund exists because of the generosity of people in our community, and this gift reflects the deep compassion that continues to make this work possible.”

If you or a family member needs cancer crisis funding, applications can be found at gracf.org under Apply for a Grant. Free Range Food Co-op Launches Fall Fundraiser

Co-op raises $710,000 from less than 20% of members this spring; aims to complete funding this fall

Free Range Food Co-op recently kicked off its Fall "Many Hands Make Light Work" Fundraising Campaign at the Grand Rapids Farmers' Market, building momentum from an impressive spring campaign that brought owner contributions to $710,097 toward a $1.5 million owner goal.

The numbers tell a compelling story: just 19% of current co-op owners, plus 22 non-member supporters, contributed nearly half the funding target during the official campaign that ran from April through July.

"When less than one-fifth of our owners can generate almost half our goal, it shows both strong commitment and tremendous untapped potential," said FRFC Board Chair Tom Connolly. "The co-op is now in a focused seven-week campaign running through October 31, targeting the remaining $790,000 needed for the member-owner contribution."

Local Response
Fundraising began quietly in March 2024 with board members and close volunteer commitments, followed by "Owners Hosting Owners" events that generated strong early momentum throughout the spring and summer.
That positive response led organizers to spend the fall and winter months of 2024 gathering additional pledges and finalizing their comprehensive spring 2025 campaign strategy.
The co-op's measured approach - pausing between campaigns to assess and regroup - reflects the careful planning local residents have come to expect from the all-volunteer organization.

Owner Outreach Effort
To reach the remaining 80% of owners who haven't yet contributed, a team of Owner Connector volunteers are making personal calls throughout the seven-week campaign period.

"Our ten-person Owner Connector Team is giving an incredible amount of their time and energy to reach out to these owners,” said Becky LaPlant, Community Investment Campaign Team Lead. “There are ten of them so if you're one of our 1,337 owners and reading this, please answer their call. Better yet - don't wait for a call - go to our website https://www.freerangefood.coop/invest or call us at 218-326-6667 to get involved."

Multiple Funding Sources
The co-op uses multiple funding sources working together to create a complete financial picture. Think of it as a pie with owner investment as a critical slice alongside grants and tax reduction incentives. This approach reflects what many local residents will recognize as good business sense: owners invest first.

"Like any business, we need to demonstrate our own financial commitment as we work to secure additional funding," said Tina White, FRFC Financial Officer. "The more we invest as owners, the less we need from other sources."
It is the intent of the co-op to open its doors without incurring commercial debt.

The Local Economy Connection
Free Range Food Co-op aims to be more than just another grocery store. The community-owned business will focus on local and regional producers, creating a dedicated marketplace for area farmers while giving residents more options for locally-sourced food.

Every dollar that goes towards bringing the Co-op to the Itasca area doesn't just fund a grocery store; it cultivates local jobs, supports regional farmers and producers to expand their own businesses, and creates a gathering place where neighbors become friends over fresh, local food.

About Free Range Food Co-op
Free Range Food Co-op is a locally owned grocery store in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, driven by over 1,300 co-op member-owners committed to community well-being. Built by community for the community, FRFC provides access to local, organic foods and goods while fostering a sustainable and inclusive local economy. Anonymous Donor Creates Endowment for Great Tails Animal Rescue

Great Tails Animal Rescue has received a new source of long-term support thanks to an anonymous donor who recently established an endowed fund through the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation (GRACF). This endowment will provide Great Tails with a sustainable revenue stream, helping ensure the organization can continue to provide shelter and veterinary care for stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals in Itasca County well into the future.

“This generous gift is a game-changer,” said Shannon Anttila, Great Tails Co-Founder. “It means that even after our building campaign is complete, we will have reliable funding to keep serving animals and families across our community.”

Great Tails has already raised more than $1.4 million through matching challenges, private donations, and community support. Construction of the new facility is well underway, with an expected opening in early 2026. Donations to the newly created Great Tails Animal Rescue Endowed Fund can be made through GRACF’s website gracf.org or by mailing or dropping them at the Foundation office in Grand Rapids, 350 NW 1st Avenue, Suite E, Grand Rapids, MN 55744.

In 2024, our local Community Funds raised an incredible $161,000 to support their towns and neighbors.

These funds are powered by volunteer advisory committees who work hard to fundraise, listen, and respond to their community’s needs. We’re proud to partner with them.

Together, these funds give residents and businesses a meaningful way to invest in the places they call home.

Deer River Dog Park Effort Receives $1,000 Matching Gift Challenge

Excitement is growing in Deer River as local community members work to bring a new dog park to life. Thanks to a generous $1,000 matching gift, every dollar donated now will go twice as far in helping to create a safe and fun space for dogs and their owners to enjoy.

The group leading the effort is working closely with the City of Deer River and the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation to raise the funds needed for fencing — the essential first step in developing the park. The minimum goal for the project is $25,000 (fencing alone is over $23,000), but the ultimate goal is $30,000 to allow for additional amenities such as benches.
“We’ve been busy working on the layout and are so excited to see the area the city has generously offered us made to good use for the community,” said Chelsea Pusc, owner of The Chocolate Dog. “This otherwise unused space will be absolutely perfect for a dog park with around an acre of high ground, grass, and nice trees. I know it will be an asset to our community to have a new inviting space for community members (and visitors!) to take their dogs to run around and play.”

The matching gift means that right now, every contribution — whether $25, $50, or $100 — will have double the impact. Community members and local businesses are encouraged to give and help ensure that Deer River’s first dog park can break ground soon.

There are donation buckets located in Deer River at The Chocolate Dog, Ladysippers, Dodge and Co, Cenex - Deer River, North Star Marketplace, Blueberry Hills Golf Course, Ace Hardware - Deer River. Donations can also be made through the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation online at gracf.org and searching for Deer River Dog Park. You can also send or drop off donations to GRACF at 350 NW 1st Avenue, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

About the Project
The Deer River Dog Park will transform an unused city lot into a welcoming one-acre space where dogs can safely play off-leash and owners can connect. The park will feature secure fencing, a separate entry and exit system, and eventually community-friendly amenities like benches. The project is a partnership between community members, the City of Deer River, and the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation. For more information about the Deer River Dog Park, you can contact [email protected] or 218-370-2126.
