KOOTASCA Community Action is proud to celebrate Sandy O'Fallon, the inaugural recipient of the Enduring Impact Award from the Minnesota Homeownership Center

For 26 years, Sandy has helped individuals and families achieve their homeownership goals through compassionate advising, trusted guidance, and a deep commitment to serving others. She has a remarkable ability to meet people where they are, offering encouragement, practical support, and a steady presence during some of life's most important decisions.

This award recognizes Sandy's extraordinary contributions to homeownership education and advising, as well as the positive impact she has had on families, colleagues, and communities across Minnesota.

Restoring joy, one birthday at a time.

A birthday is meant to be joyful. It is a moment to feel seen, valued, and celebrated. But for people living in poverty, a birthday often becomes something very different. Celebration requires resources of time, money, and emotional bandwidth, that poverty systematically drains away. When survival costs are so high, anything “extra” feels impossible.

KOOTASCA believes that every person deserves the joy of feeling special. If you have a child, adult, or senior citizen in your life with a birthday coming up, we can help by providing a birthday cake kit that contains cake ingredients, a pan for baking, candles, and decorations. Contact KOOTASCA’s Community Engagement services at 218-910-5486.

And Happy Birthday! Feeling special shouldn’t depend on income.

Every three years, KOOTASCA Community Action asks a simple but important question: What do people in our community need to thrive?

Our Community Needs Assessment brings together input from local residents, community partners, and staff to better understand the challenges facing families in Itasca and Koochiching counties.

The results help guide our programs, advocacy efforts, and strategic planning so we can focus our work where it is needed most.

The 2026 Community Needs Assessment will be available to the public this fall.

Because the best solutions start with listening.

🚨 May 31 Deadline: Energy Assistance Apps & Energy Related Repair

This program is for income eligible households in Itasca & Koochiching County, and can help to:

✅ Pay towards your electric, natural gas, propane, oil, firewood, etc.
✅ Provide additional crisis assistance for households experiencing a heating or electric emergency
✅ Provide Energy Related Repair (ERR) to homeowners who are experiencing a life-threatening situation or a no-heat emergency due to a malfunctioning or nonfunctioning heating system.

Applications must be received or postmarked by May 31, 2026

Community Action is about helping people build stronger, more stable lives.

In 2025, KOOTASCA Community Action helped our neighbors achieve meaningful results. Here is just a sampling of the impact made possible through our programs and partnerships:

• 127 households avoided eviction
• 90 households obtained safe and affordable housing
• 168 children participated in Head Start
• 145 young children improved emergent literacy skills
• 300 individuals improved their physical health and well-being
• 300 individuals improved their mental and behavioral health and well-being
• 205 people increased their skills and knowledge to help improve conditions in our community
• 4,659 households received energy assistance to help keep the heat and lights on

These numbers represent real people, real progress, and the power of neighbors helping neighbors.

And this is only part of the story.
