The Kent Dems Women’s Caucus had a blast visiting the Westside today while canvassing for First Ward of the City of Grand Rapids Commissioner candidate Lindsey Perez-Plescher and State House District 84 candidate Khristian Silvis—an area they'll each represent in our state and local government when they win this November!

If you live on the Westside or in broader West Grand Rapids...your very own City Commissioner, AliciaMarie Belchak, could be knocking on your door very soon along with our Caucus!

We encourage all residing in the First Ward (West and Southwest Grand Rapids) and State House District 84 (Grandville, Walker, and portions of Northwest/West Grand Rapids) to make a plan to vote this November and learn more about what these candidates have to offer their communities!

This Labor Day we recognize those who have fought for better pay, better benefits and better working conditions for American workers.

Some of those fighters were the 6,000 workers who walked off their jobs at 50 Grand Rapids furniture factories in 1911 after attempts to negotiate higher wages, a shorter workday and the right to collectively bargain failed.

The strike lasted four months before workers returned to their jobs without the gains they sought. While the workers were not immediately successful in improving pay and working conditions, the strike is considered the foundation for organized labor and union membership in Grand Rapids.

The Spirit of Solidarity monument in Ah Nab Awen Park, commemorated in 2007, tells the story of the strike through three figures; two men and a woman. Sculptor Roberto Chenlo included two men to represent the workers and a woman to recognize the thousands of wives and families who marched in solidarity and supported the strikers.

The Kent Dems Labor-Educator Caucus's Dogs & Suds 2026 event is on Saturday, September 19 from 4pm to 7pm.

You're invited! Tickets are $25 for union members and $30 for non-members. There is more information available in the graphic below.

The Women’s Caucus is sponsoring this event along with several other caucuses. This is an excellent way to show support for our party, raise necessary funds, and also remind folks that women belong and are central to working class and labor movements!
