Over the last few years, the Gear Library has had the privilege of working with the Grand Rapids community in many ways. It has been an exciting process of learning how we can best support outdoor recreation experiences for those with limited financial resources, outdoor knowledge, or community support.
Throughout this time, the Gear Library has received an enormous demand from teachers, after school programs, and non-profit organizations who work with kids. We have learned that working with youth-focused groups is the most impactful and important component of our program, and it is also the best way to ensure that our limited capacity is directed towards those with the highest need for positive outdoor experiences.
With this impact in mind, we have decided to focus GR Outside's mission solely on organized, youth-focused groups.
Effective on January 1st, 2025: The Gear Library will be offering its services to youth-serving organizations only. The Gear Library will no longer offer its services to the general public. All current members may utilize their Gear Library accounts through the end of 2024.
Effective immediately: No new individual or family memberships may be started. Organized, youth-serving groups are still encouraged to contact us to inquire about Gear Library access.
Kayaking trips, $5 kayak rentals, sledding, and other public events will still be available, but through the Grand Rapids Department of Parks and Recreation. You can stay up to date on these opportunities on the GR Parks and Recreation social media accounts and website.
Thank you for your support as the Gear Library has been developing. It has been a somewhat unconventional approach to promoting access to outdoor recreation, and its impact is nowhere near finished. If you are involved with any organized groups who work with kids or families, please refer them to us and we'd be happy to explore ways we can work together. Lastly, please continue to follow along on GR Outside social media, as we will continue to post stories of our impact.
With gratitude,
The GR Outside Team
