We had a badge pinning ceremony today for our three newest firefighters that completed their fire academy. They barely meet the height and age requirements in our bylaws, but they can grow a better mustache than most our battalion so they were signed on.

Chief Gehling does intend to have a discussion with them on the changes they made to apparatus #5571 during their first routine maintenance check.

Today, Grand Meadow Fire & Rescue, had the pleasure of teaching the Grand Meadow preschool, kindergarten, and ECFE class about fire prevention. Educating the next generation of firefighters is something that cannot be forgotten.

Thank you firefighters Cameron Turner, Karsen Ulwelling, and Steve Meyerhofer for teaching today.

-Check your smoke detector batteries

-Clean your dryer vent before Winter

GMFD had the opportunity to conduct school bus extrication training in August and September training nights.

Some of the things we used & learned from this training:

- Stabilizing a school bus using our Kodiak bars & cribbing

- Using our Jaws of Life, Cutter Tool, and Ram Tool to assist in extrication and stabilization

- Learned the structural integrity of where to create purchase or entry points on the school bus such as removing windows and strategically and safely cutting access points.

- How to remove seats from the interior of the bus to create a safer rescue environment.

Hats off to all local bus drivers for providing safe transportation for our kiddos.

These were great training exercises for our firefighters and were very educational. Thank you to training officers, Ethan Hanken and Jon Jacobson for lining up this training for us. Also thank you to firefighters, Brandon Gregerson and Steve Meyerhofer, for the use of their heavy equipment to stage the training.

Harvest is around the corner, Slow down, Be Patient, Only pass when absolutely necessary!

Training event 9/3/25

Grand Meadow Fire always has a great relationship with the citizens it serves and I would like to maintain that relationship. This message is regarding some concerns from our training held on Wednesday night to mitigate concerns. We conducted Helicopter landing zone training as well as First responder training. We did classroom training first and then landed a helicopter at approximately 8:15 with a departure at 9:00. This training was originally set up for August 20th 2025 back in February. Life happened and unfortunate events happened that week within our emergency services family so I made the decision to cancel the training. We worked to align all departments as well as Mayo staff that graciously put the training on and we had to pivot to the 9/3/25 date. We then put out a notification at 3:30 just to inform citizens that we would be having a helicopter in town so people did not have to worry that any of our loved ones were having an emergency. The location was withheld to maintain a secure landing zone. The original August 20th date was published in our report to city council since June I believe. If anyone would like to discuss any concerns regarding this training feel free to call 507-754-5280 ext. 6 and leave a message and we will contact you so we can discuss any concerns.

Thanks for your support and understanding,
Chief Gehling

GMFD, GMAAS, and GMPD will be conducting a training exercise tonight involving setting up a helicopter landing zone. If you see or hear lights, sirens, or a helicopter - please know that this is a training event and we ask that you assist us in keeping the training area free and clear and do not interfere.

Thank you

Training announcement

GMFD will be conducting a Mayo 1 landing zone training this evening. We just wanted to let the public know so they are not alarmed if they hear a helicopter landing in town.

Thanks
