Now is the time to treat for Japanese beetles.

Japanese beetles are an invasive pest that has been detected in Grand Junction since 2022 and can damage more than 300 plant species, including lawns, gardens, trees, and crops. With the agricultural land surrounding our community, protecting against Japanese beetles helps protect more than just your backyard.

The recommended treatment window for grubs is now, before adult beetles emerge later this month and into July. Scotts GrubEx is available for residential use without a pesticide license, and local lawn care companies can also provide treatment.

Live between 24 Road and 27½ Road, and Patterson Road and H½ Road? Your property may qualify for free treatment through Mesa County. Call 970-902-3886 to learn more.

If you spot an adult Japanese beetle, contact the CSU Tri-River Area Extension office for identification and report the sighting to Mesa County Noxious W**d and Pest Management.

Check the interactive treatment map, treatment guidance, and FAQs on engagegj.org/beat-the-beetle.

Here are a few City updates for the weekend, including some information for those heading to JUCO games.

With severe to extreme drought conditions and elevated wildfire risk, City Council approved a resolution for temporary restrictions on fireworks sales and permitting within the City of Grand Junction. Professional fireworks displays at Lincoln Park Sports Complex are still scheduled at this time, pending weather and fire conditions, including a JUCO-hosted show on Monday, May 25.

Around Suplizio Field and Stocker Stadium, visitors will also notice some changes, including the removal of the former ticket booth. The work is part of ongoing improvements to access, visibility, and public safety in the area.

In other updates, City Council reviewed the draft Housing Needs Assessment, which is now available for public review on EngageGJ.

Council also voted 5-2 to set a June 3, 2026, public hearing on proposed amendments to the City’s camping on public property ordinance.

While converting non-essential grasses into low-water-use landscapes is not new for the City of Grand Junction, current drought conditions make this work more important than ever.

Starting this spring, 12 city parks and open spaces will begin transitioning from traditional turf to native grass. Native grass requires significantly less water, making it an important part of Grand Junction’s long-term drought response. Neighbors near project areas will receive information before work begins.

The City remains committed to maintaining beautiful, functional parks while being responsible stewards of our water resources. More details at https://bit.ly/4nJ8UBF.

City Council heard an update Monday night on the draft Housing Needs Assessment, a regional analysis focused on current housing conditions, affordability, and future housing needs in Grand Junction and Mesa County.

The assessment is helping provide a data-driven understanding of local housing challenges that will help inform future policy discussions, investment decisions, the Housing Action Plan, and the City’s 2026–2030 CDBG Consolidated Plan.

Interviews with City Council members and Mesa County Commissioners are still underway, and both the final Housing Needs Assessment and Housing Action Plan are still in development.

Watch the presentation and read the draft report at www.engagegj.org/housing-needs-assessment.
